Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE

1 Answer

Oil change has anyone ever been told that they need a special "hose with a fitting that opens a valve" to have their oil changed? Had a garage tell me this and that it should be stored somewhere in the car. Couldn't find it. Just got the car. Dealer laughed at me. I have an appointment there on Monday

you are have what is known as a dry tappet. last for 5-10 min on startup. now you can leave it or you can change the oil and filter. when changing oil I mean you use oil treatment first to remove the old oil deposits. then change the oil. the only other way is expensive removing the cam's that involve taking of the timing chain and other parts to remove the dry tappet and clean out the vaine. but usaly a good oil change will fix this problem..

My car leaks oil and i had a oil change but it still leaks what could it be?

Take heart, even the best mechanics make mistakes and I knew one who didn't tighten the oil filter enough and the oil drained out of the car and ruined the engine completely. It's easy to verify where oil is leaking from, just get a 'black light' bulb from the store and fit it too a trouble light and shine the thing around your engine and the source of the oil leak will show right up. I've never really gotten onto anybody for making mistakes but I am careful when it comes to verifying things are done okay so I don't see problems occur later as a result.

Leaky Valve Cover

the only "special" tool you would need is a set of torx sockets. the intake manifold is fairly self explanitory to remove, the bolts are in the center and they require a torx socket to be removed, The EGR pipes need two big wrenches (I believe a 1 1/2", and a 1") and lots of penetrating spray oil. Depending on your mechanical abilities, you could spend a good part of a weekend on it... Espically the thermostat housing! Its a tricky fit, and the plastic cant handle too many mistakes! If you decide to take it on, you should replace the intake gaskets, (they commonly leak, and aren't much $) make sure you have the right thermostat housing, (There should be only one sensor port on it, Sport-Trac's look identical but have two sensor port holes) a coolant bypass hose, (short hose under the housing) and obviously the coolant and the valve cover gaskets. It is a lot of work, but except for the EGR tube removal, and fitting the thermostat housing, it really isin't too bad.

Most likey a bad head gasket between #2 and 3 cylinder. Pull the valve cover and see ifthe valves are working, and blue smoke could be valve guide seals and the valves may be stuck open.

It is possible that you do have bad rings and is causing an excess amount of crankcase pressure. Since you just have a hose hooked up now. Try running it to the big port vacuum fitting on the base of the carb.
