Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Coupe

1 Answer

It sounds like the battery but it was running fine this morning.

The car will not start but I don't believe it's the battery or starter.

Have you checked for spark from the plugs? There are many things this could be, a fuel issue, a park issue, electrical issue. Does it crank? Is so, does it crank slower or faster than usual? I had an issue similar to this a while back, I checked everything, fuel pump, plugs, coils, relays, fuses, everything checked out. It ended up being a CPS and bad TPS sensor. (only about 40 bucks each)

To check the starter, have someone hold the key in the crank position while you tap the starter with a hammer. This is a common practice. This is likely a temperature related problem.

Here is an idea. Check the connections between the battery and the car's ground and the starter. Then find the ground cable which connects the engine to the car and check the connections there as well. Often times odd ball electrical problems are caused by a faulty ground, especially when there is a starter issue. May help, costs nothing but a few moments of your time, and once in a dozen times it is the problem.

You can have someone tap on the starter with a hammer or similar tool while you try to start the car.

Have the alternator and battery checked. The battery may not be holding a charge. The alternator may not be charging the battery,it should put out between 14 and 15 volts, any less the alternator is bad.

Try having one person turn the key to the start position and hold it there, while someone else taps on the starter with a hammer. If tapping on it makes it work, you need a starter. Good luck. Hope this helps.

High pitch noise when turn key to start / engine not turning over

Check your battery first. Cold weather does horrible things to car batteries... if it's more of a grinding sound I would say that your starter gear is bad. I believe they call it a ring gear? I had a similar problem with a kushman scooter that I use to deliver snowcones through the neighborhoods. It has teeth that need to engage and if those teeth have been grinded down it will have a hard time engaging....
