I think its set up that way not to shift into the higher gears until it reaches a certain tempature. I know my chevy picup has a temp. sender unit that won't let it shift to overdrive until it reaches a certain temp.

The Pacifica will not shift past 4th gear. It shifts normally through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. Their is no high reeving RPS, no clunking, no lurching. It will just not shift past 4th gear.

is there an OD button that might have been pressed .if it has lots of miles on it it could be needing a flush job . last one I got done was around 100.00 at jiffy lube.

Od light on

Hi there,

When you press in the Overdrive (OD) switch, this simply allows your gearbox to use the highest gear (when it needs to). For example, if your transmission has 1,2 & D gears, the OD acts as a 4th gear. This is useful on open roads and will help with economy.

If the OD light remains ON, then you have deactivated the 4th gear. This means the car will change up to 3rd gear only, until you depress the OD switch again.

Deactivating the OD is useful, when you wish to "manually" change down to 3rd gear, to climb a hill, or need better acceleration.

You may have a bad clutch disc or pressure plate. You may have a bad transmission. Have you checked the master cylinder? I guess it may be a release bearing. Has this been going on ever since you changed to a 5 speed?

Assuming there is no shift solenoid problems,(1-2 solenoid OFF in 3rd gear and ON in 4th gear!) Then I would say that your transmission is broken but more often than not, is repairable. First order of business would be to remove the transmission drain pan from the bottom of the unit. Loosen the attaching bolts slowly and in a circular manner, allowing the trans fluid to drain into an appropriate size pan. Remove the last of the pan bolts, and without spilling the last of the fluid, remove the pan from the trans. Carefully inspect the fluid for the presence metal either as chunks or suspended in the fluid. Also, smell the fluid for any "burnt" oder.
The more metal you find, the more money to repair the unit.
After component repair, be sure all trouble codes are cleared.

2000 toyota echo, transmission won't shift to 4th

First thing to do is check the fluid level if that ok you may want to think about having the transmission filter and fluid changed, there are other possibilities but check these first

This sounds like a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) problem, have the code(s) retrieved from the powertain control module and see if that code comes up.
