Question about 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab

Check Engine Light comes on and off w/ P0304 code

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota (6 cyl). The CEL came on w/ P0304 code in Feb. Replaced all wires, plugs, cap, and rotor. CEL went off. 2 weeks ago CEL (same code) came on again. Went off after a day. CEL (same code) came on again yesterday.

This may be a defective fuel injector or a defective PCM (powertrain control module).

Wiring diagram for the ecm plugs

Im idling at the light in my 2000 Dakota R/T and all of a sudden my check engine light comes on and the engine develops a miss and starts to smoke. Diag code says misfire in #5 cyl and there is a rich raw fuel smell from exhaust. I have 175K trouble free miles and have checked compression which reveals worn but good piston rings.I replaced head gaskets and of course still exists. When I got a hand to crank while I checked voltage at each injector, #5 showed higher than the rest at all times without dropping to zero, so i'm replacing the ECM which controls signals to injectors. Oh yeah I replaced #5 injector before voltage check to no avail. Tell me if you think Im on the right track replacing ECM.

Sat, sometime in January cel appeared Sun Engine steaming, upper hose clamp on engin was loose at engine connection cyl 1,3 side tightened clamp, washed away antifreze Mon read codes, engine misfire cyl...

I am sorry to tell you this but sure sounds like a head gasket getting weak. By year a model I am figuring you have a EJ-25 2.5 boxer motor. Not easy to really do plug test but are your plugs coming out with moisture on them? Check oil for water also. You did not mention mileage on car. If you have access to a compression tester that would be what I would test. I hope this leads you in the right direction. Sounds like you are mechanically inclined, If So, it is not a very large job to replace head gaskets. Takes more paitence than time. Subaru is the greatest company for working on your self. Prices of parts are also very easy to swallow. Good luck and have a good day.

Check engine code

I'm new to this website, have a problem with my '93 Dakota, 5.2L but thought I'd post to your question.

The readers would need more information than what you supplied.

On my Dakota, to check the CEL(Check Engine Light), cycle the ignition switch to RUN-OFF-RUN-OFF-RUN, then count the flashes of the CEL. There will be a distinct pause between each set of 2 number flashes, finally ending with a code of 55 signaling the end of the code display.

Some of the codes will keep the CEL lit all the time, while others will store but not light the CEL when running.
If you post the codes you see, and look them up, it might give you (and the reaers here) a better idea of your problem.
