Transmission stuck in 5th gear???

Today I got in my 2004 Nissan Maxima and turned the key to notice that it whirlled alot before starting and when it did my Service Engine Soon light came on. So I said hmm...then I put it in reverse backed up put it in drive and started to accelerate only to notice that I was barely moving. I had no power. I have the variable transmission so I pushed it over to manual and noticed that my display said 5th gear. After stopping and turning the car off and trying it again it was fine till I turned it off again then the same problem all over again....whirl, whirl whirl, Service engine soon and then 5th gear only. PLEASE HELP!! same thing happens to mine...one 5th gear speed is hit on highway,it wont downshift and stays in 5th gear

I am thinking about buying a 2004 nissan maxima that has a speed sensor problem....I test drove the car today and there was slight jerking and the dealership told me this was because of the speed sensor...

Yes on both accounts. TIP: Get them to put in writing they will guarantee their repair for X amount of days, just in case sensor does not fix "jerking" problem or if comes back.

Transmission stuck in 5th gear???

This is most likely one of your cam shaft sensors. The reason your transmission goes to 5th gear and stays there is because the car automatically goes into "safe mode". This prevents you from running the car on high RPM's which decreases the chance of causing more damage to the engine.
Depending on the code you get from the check engine light, it will be one of the cam-shaft sensors or the crank shaft sensor. A code reader will answer that question.
Often the sensor just fails or oil gets into the connectors which prevents proper reading. This sometimes goes away temporarily when engine is hot but problem will return.
To replace the cam shaft sensors you are looking at approximately 30 min of work. Its a tight fit but not a difficult job.
Cam shaft sensors are about $80. Not sure how much crank haft sensor is.
Hope this helps, and good luck.

Engine cranking but no start

If your key is not programmed for the car, then it will have this issue. I bought a 99 Maxima 3 weeks ago. One of the keys was programmed and worked perfectly. The other would turn the car over and stop it immediately. If you do this too many times without the key being programmed from the dealer or another source, it will erase all keys that are programmed and lock down the ignition.

Service engine soon light after cleaning carb

I too have just had the Service Engine Soon light come on, this week. Hmmm, interesting. We all have 2004 Nissan Sentra's. I too believe the dealers rip people off.

A co-worker asked immediately - How many miles do I have - I answered: 62,528. He said that is a Dealer function...they set it to go off around 60k, so we bring our cars in. Cha-Ching!

Hey, so what if it is not true? Luckily, I have the RECALL NOTICE, so my car goes in today anyway. I will ask them to turn off the SES. If they won't, then I am going to find a service manual, and turn my SES light off myself.
