Question about 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

In Cold weather my 2001 Chevy Cavalier died frequently?

I thought at first it was gas line freeze. When driving the car on a test run the throttle "Stuck" about 2/3 of the way. Another issue is that the electrical system surges with the engine???
I put a "Gallon" of Heet in over a short period of time, changed the alternator and battery and still had the problem. Then once the weather warmed it stopped?
This problem is perplexing and my worry is that my daughter will have the sticking throttle problem and panic when she is driving it, and no parent wants that.

Check the throttle linkage at the throttle body look for anything that could be binding the linkage up and preventing the throttle from closing, (ie something getting caught in there) if thats ok, the cable could be starting to fray inside it's sheath and binding up the throttle as well or could be kinked. if thats the case, a new throttle cable is needed. Also besure that the cruise wasnt on and you didnt engage the cruise by accident.

If you're saying you may have ice stuck in the hose that goes into your gas tank, yes Heet is fine. Heet is just fuel additive that gets rid of water and keep gas from freezing in the lines. If ice is out of the question, I'd have your tank dropped, might have something that died in there ie. mouse that made a home in there?

Chevy 2001 Cavalier won't start

Trace the power source from fuse to relay etc and make sure pump is working. if all checks out then check pump working and for preasue at engine. you may have a dammaged fuel line from the tank which would also cause the same problem

Reduced power light is on and drives slow

Try adding gas line antifreeze to your fuel. If you have water in the gas, this will clear it up. Water in the gas line can turn to slush or even ice when the temperature dips below freezing, causing reduced power because of reduced fuel flow.

My 1996 chevy truck want stay runing, when i push the excelerator it die i change the fuel relay,i reset the distribution timing. please help

You may have the same problem my Wifes car has right now- ice in the fuel line.

Dump a can of DryGas (or "Heet") in the tank, and after about an hour, start your truck. Let it run for 15 minutes or so (restart if it stalls) - if it will not run that long try moving your truck into a warm garage, let it sit for about an hour, and try again.

The DryGas does not perform miracles, and takes time, especially in the bitter cold as of late.

Fuel line icing is usually caused by allowing your vehicle to run nearly empty, and then refueling in cold weather. This causes condensation in the gas tank, which freezes in the gas lines.

I have repeated this mantra to my Wife for nearly our entire 27 years of marraige, but she still will run her tank nearly dry before getting gas, even though it has so far cost us two replacement gas tanks, more than a couple gas tank leak patches (the other problem with running low all the time is rotting out your tank!), and uncounted winter car starting problems. Please help me break the trend!

While driving my 2003 chevy cavalier the engine will die right before the car comes to a complete stop. Sometimes at happens at low speeds when not giving any gas.

it sounds like a dirty throttle body. Just spray clean with throttle body cleaner. Or it could be a plugged air filter...not getting enough air. Or possible fuel filter needs to be changed.

My o2 status will start warm up then will not idle, it dies. if you give it gas it runs is there a idling sensor? this happened after the weather got cold if thats any clue

have you had water undere the hood? splashing thru rain? it sounds like a bad throttle position sensor, possably some water in it. now that it is cold, it freezes up and makes reading the throttle difficult

2001 cavalier died while driving, now it wont start

Could be failed fuel pump. Disconnect fuel line at engine and turn over a couple times having something to catch gas in. If electric pump don't turn over engine, just turn key to run position for a few seconds. Maybe clogged fuel filter or faulty pump if no gas shows. Change fuel filter and try again. If none, change pump.
