Question about 1992 Volkswagen GTI

1 Answer

High fuel consumption/ strong smell of fuel

Found a split in one of the air hoses recently, car had been sort of missing for a while, after replacing the hose there still is a strong smell of fuel and excess use of fuel. The car also feels like its missing and is leaving a oily marker on the floor at the bottom of the exhaust. Any help much appreciated! The car is a mark 4 golf.

HOLD light is on........car is running fine, recently went in for a tune-up This is a 2001 Kia Sportage

there is a 4-5 inch fuel return hose coming off the fuel rail. Usually most technicians do not see the fuel leak because it is slight and it evaporates fast. it is also close to the cold air intake for the heater(cowl) making the fuel smell inside the vehicle strong. the hose when removed will be dryrotted and hard. the hose costs under 10 dollars and a half hour to an hour labor is needed. it comes directly off the fuel pressure regulator

High mileage car. Low quality Kenyan fuel. Low on

High on mileage means that the engine has done a lot of work, possible that the compression is down, need to check if this is below level, if there is oil used in excess then the engine needs an overhauling subject to the cost estimated.

Cant compromise on bad fuel as this will bring down the power of the engine.
High fule consumption means poor setting so fuel and ignition , check fuel settings- pump calibration and timing.

YES THE OLD TURBO RESONATOR HAD SPLIT TOO. I did not use the o-ring from the old part I found one 1 side down that fit tight around the new part. A loose o-ring is going to weak air too. try the air filter first and the intake.the spark plugs then and after all go to a garage for checking compression timing and the head gasket.

Strong gas smell when engine is turned off.Car runs smoothly otherwise. Started doing this abruptly. Of course milage is now suffering

Hi,
This sounds like a problem with the "Emissions control system"
Designed to absorb fuel vapours - and release them when engine running, When they go wrong it leads to excessive fuel consumption, fuel smells and possibly leaks.

It is most likely a split pipe along this system - which needs checking carefully to find out where exactly.
Overfilling of your tank can lead to pressure problems - popping off a hose, so if you remember doing this - check any carbon filter element and hoses around it.

Fuel smell in camaro

50 miles reduction in the conditions mentioned means that your economy is about right
there is a small hose back from the tank to under the cap to release air trapped when filling
koses can get loose , crack or break
tank sender units gaskets can break down
look around the tank area for the leak /smell
a damp patch in the dust is a good give away

2002 Beetle: smell of gasoline since vacuum hose was replaced

If the hose he used wasn't made to hold gas, it is going to melt. If he crimped it to make it fit and the fuel pressure is too great, it may split. You should get the factory part, if it is a shaped hose, not a straight section that can be clamped into the system. As for where the fuel may go, you need to look at the area under the hose that split to see if there are stains that still smell strong from the gas that collected on that area.
