Question about 2003 Jaguar X-Type

1 Answer

Basically I need to know what my antifreeze dial should read. I'm wondering if the needle should be closer to the cool side or dead on in the middle? Also how often should I be replacing my coolant?

While im driving the thermostat will stay at the c and then slowly rise to the middle of the dial. Where exactly should the needle be? Closer to the cool side or dead on in the middle?

The heater doesn't work very well on my 2000 Chevy Venture van. I'm wondering if I should try replacing the thermostat. Or, it is all computer controlled now.

If heat gauge reads normal, stays in the middle, then you do not need to mes up with the thermostat. I own a 2000 Chevy Venture and changing the thermostat was not fan.
It may be the Temperature Control Module, which you can buy for $45 and replace without problem, or may be an partially obstructed heating core. The GM Dex-Cool antifreeze, the read one, has additives, but if you do not flush the radiator every 2 or 3 years, can result in partially clogged heater core. I have done on my car twice till now, and replaced with green Prestone, on my own risk. Hope this will help. If need more information let me know. A have the Haynes manual for Chevy Venture 2000, and I am a car dealer.

There is a leak that is bad enough the coolant tank drains within minutes im wondering if it could be a hose because it drains in the middle though closer to the opposite side of the car

If it's a hose, it will leak fast, but don't count out other things like the radiator, water pump, head gasket, etc.

fill the system up with antifreeze and water or just water for diagnosis purposes, and use a pressure tester to force fluid out faster.

Maybe, if the leak is fast, you can look under the car to see exactly where it is coming from.

You say middle and opposite side of car (is this as you're sitting in the driver's seat?).

Where is the leak, now?

I was changing antifreez on my car. i could not get it filled. car heated up.but temperture needle is in middle position. is this normal

When filling the cooling system you need to fill it with the car running and the cap off. When the thermostat opens the water will circulate from the radiator to the block. This will allow you to fill it the rest of the way. the temp needle on that car is usually pretty close to the middle as a normal reading.

Anti-freeze bucket is slushy. no heat in car

My guess is that you either have "dead" antifreeze, or too much water and not enough antifreeze in your cooling system for the geographic region in which you live.
The "dead" antifreeze? Antifreeze has a shelf-life, and eventually it quits being effective, leaving it without the ability to resist freezing or boiling over. Check the specific gravity of the liquid in the overflow bottle. A tester costs about five bucks, and you will know in seconds whether your coolant needs to be replaced.
As a mechanic of thirty-five years' experience, I can tell you that if your antifreeze is freezing and you don't live in Alaska, your antifreeze is too weak, and you need to replace it. If I have helped you, please remember to vote/comment.

My temperature gage is going over in the red and my heat is not

Check the sensor which controls the cooling fans that cools the radiator it prevents the engine from over heating and allows the temp gauge to stay at normal range.recently had problems with my 2003 impala overheating it was the sensor had the thermostat replace as well.

How can you tell if your water pump is bad. Boxster running hot. Steam coming out of side vents. I waited and allowed engine to cool. Without starting it, refilled with antifreeze and antifreeze is leaking...

It could be either hose or the pump. Introduce no more antifreeze to this car until you have found your leak as you are just wasting your money.

You are going to have to visually inspect it for the leak. Typically if it is a pump, the pulley and the underside of the pump will be wet.

Manual heating system with automatic trans. 7.3 L Diesel, 45k miles

it may be your thermostat, the gauge on the dash is a dummy gauge, there is only three positions that it sees, dead cold, operating temp, and hot, so even though the needle looks fine it just means it s closer to operating temp then it is to cold,
