Re: key doesnt turn
Dose your car have a key removal lock ? a lock you have to press befor you can remove the key ?
there is a shift over ride by your shifter. between/around the shifter and the radio (closer to the sifter) there is a small round plastic cover you can remove with a small flat head screw driver. remove this. you will a key or the screw driver and insert it into, what looks like a key hole for your car and turn/press (sorry for being vauge GMC's change year to year) this should allow you to move the shifter into park. make sure the car is off or at lest you have the E-brake on as well as your peddle brakes.

Do you mean the car is running, or it's stuck on accessories? Does the key shut off one notch, or not at all. If it does turn off one notch, does it turn on again easily just not off?. Sounds like your key is worn, ignition is worn , or your car is not locking in park properly. Is this something new, or has it been stiff moving lately? First I'd try pushing gear shift into park firmly, even putting it back into drive ,then into park again. If that doesnt work, try wiggling the steering wheel as you try to turn the key off. If that doesnt work, try pushing in and out on the key as you are trying to pull it back and out. Let me know how this works and if it doesn't work, we can try some other methods. When you do get it out, take your car permit into a pontiac dealership, and they can cut you a new key by the VIN number. Don't get a key cut from the key you have cause it's worn out and will only make another bad key. The dealer has the code they need to cut it the way it was when it was new. Let me know how you make out. If the key is stuck on the acc position and all the accessories are still on, disconnect your battery so you don't drain it. Let me know.
Rock Auto sells the steel part for this also, and fairly cheap...had to put one in an 07 charger a few years ago....now my journey is doing the same thing.
I took the gear shift plate off and reached down in there with screwdriver and pulled up on the plastic lever and it let me shift outta park.
So, with that being said....hope it's just this part that I need.
My dash lights and, traction and that other light is on and won't go out,so not sure.
But at least I can get it in gear.
Okay, you are correct, the key is stuck because of the shifter lock wont release, the most common reason is its stuck, you will need to remove the covering around shift to get to shifter lock release solenoid, there you will clean and lube it, you will need to move it by hand as you spray wd40 on the arms, you will see how it work by pressing the shift release and you will see to lever that gets pushed, it wont move because its stuck but you will see the levers move inside, hope this helps, good day.
there is a slot next to the gear shifter that you can put a key into and push down that will release the lock on the the shifter...
if its a truck and your putting the key in the ignition and turning it on, or at the very least to the acc position and it wint shift, apply the brake and then try, if it still wont move your most likley going to have an ignition lock malfunction... the cylinder that your key slides into and turn, to turn the car on has an unlocking piece that allows it to unlock only then the key is in..... try those and let me know....
hope this helps
try playing with shifter. move from park to low rapidly and push to park with some force. try this a few times. the shifter sends a signal to a lock actuator to allow your ignition to release key. if that doesnt work remove your steering wheel lower cover. usually acces 2-3 screws from underneath cover. u will see what looks like a gold pushbutton located near lock cylinder u may be able to get key released by manually actuating that solenoid
does your key stays in the ignition position? or can you turn it back to acc or lock? it might be a stuck ignition switch mechanism inside or a shorted circuit that latches the ignition...have it checked or you can try to open it the switch yourself..but with caution if this is your first time. Pls give me a feedback. thanks!
http://www.custombilletstore.com/product_p/1028.htm I know this is late but I had the same problem. The release wouldn't work either. I had to remove the shifter and take the cover off. A spring broke off the pink lever in the front of the shifter. The shifter would move side to side but couldn't be pulled back. The above link sells a replacement part that might work.
