Question about 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis

Coolant guage only registers about 1/4 of range when warm. think maybe coolant sensor but want to make sure not indicative of larger issue...buddy is looking at '98 marquis and has limited budget

The coolant sensor is a grate start. it seams to be that every thing is working just alot of risistance from point A to point B.

to find it locate the sensor by finding 2 small wires leading to the side of the engine. make sure the car is off and cold befor removing. it will leak radiator fluid so have a bucket ready. remove the sensor and clean it off(8mm socket should work). note that you have to put pipe selant on the threads befor re installing. also inspect the wires for corosion. if they are corored just replace the wires. After everything is back together start the car and inspect your work make sure it's not leaking. if the problem continues receck the wires but all the way the ECM/computer give them a wiggle, this may re conect a lose wire. don't pull just push softly and wiggly up and down.

Coolant sensor or thermostat not to much to get the parts and repair yourself. I dont see a big problem

Why does the temp gauge indicate the car is running hot when it is not?


Ahh ... the gas gauge / fuel level gauge does not work, either.

Maybe you need to replace the motors that are behind those dials. People are getting charged $300-$500 to have the fuel gauge replaced when the problem really is the little motor - 5 or 6 of them for less than $30. 2003 Buick LeSabre owners are having the same problem with their fuel gauges being erratic.

Temp guage does not move


There are 2 sensors 1 is temp sensor for dash gauge and 1 is engine coolant sensor for computer. Does the upper radiator hose get hot and pressurized. The engine coolant sensor has two wires one has a reference voltage 5 volts and the other is signal return to computer with key on is will have a minimal voltage .25 volts this tells you that the wire is not broken between sensor and computer. the sensor is a negative coefficient sensor average sensor range about 390 ohms warms and 2400 ohms cold engine.

P0116 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Range/Performance Problem
The ECT (Engine coolant temperature) sensor is a thermistor which changes resistance based on temperature of the coolant in contact with it. The ECT sensor will be located in the block or coolant passage. Usually it is a two wire sensor. One wire is a 5 Volt supply from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to the ECT. The other is a ground to the ECT.

As the temperature of the coolant changes the resistance on the signal wire changes accordingly. The PCM monitors the reading and determines coolant temperature in order to perform essential engine fuel management. When engine coolant is low, sensor resistance is high. The PCM will see a high signal voltage (low temperature). When coolant is warm, the sensor's resistance is low and the PCM will see a high temperature. The PCM expects to see slow resistance changes on the ECT signal circuit. If it sees a quick change in voltage that isn't consistent with an engine warming up, this P0116 code will set. Or if it sees a lack of change in ECT signal, this code may set.

Symptoms: There may be no noticeable symptoms if the problem is very intermittent, however the following may occur:
MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination
Poor drivability
Black smoke at tailpipe
Poor fuel economy
May not idle
May exhibit stalling or misfires

Causes: Potential causes of the P0116 code include:
Missing or stuck-open thermostat
Bad ECT sensor
Short or open on signal wire
Short or open on ground wire
Poor connections in wiring

Possible Solutions: If there are any other ECT sensor codes, diagnose them first.
Using a scan tool, check the ECT reading. On a cold engine, it should match the IAT reading or should be equal to ambient (outside) temperature reading. If it does match the IAT or ambient temp, check the freeze frame data on your scan tool (if equipped). The saved data should tell you what the ECT reading was when the fault occurred.

a) If the saved info indicates that the engine coolant reading was at the coldest exreme (around -30 deg. F) then that's a good indication the ECT resistance was intermittently high (unless you live in Anchorage!) Check for an open in the ECT sensor ground and signal circuits and repair as necessary. If they appear okay, warm the engine up while monitoring the ECT for any intermittent jumps high or low. If there are replace the ECT.

b) If the saved info indicates that the engine coolant reading was at the warmest exreme (around 250+ deg.F) then that's a good indication the ECT resistance was intermittently low. Check for a short to ground on the signal circuit and repair as necessary. If it appears okay, warm the engine up while monitoring the ECT for any intermittent jumps high or low. If there are replace the ECT.

P0128 Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)
This means that the engine's PCM detected that the engine has not reached the required temperature level within a specified amount of time after starting the engine. The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. Similar codes: P0125

In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle.

Symptoms: You will likely not notice any drivability problems other than the MIL illumination.

Causes: A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Low engine coolant level
Leaking or stuck open thermostat
Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor

Possible Solutions: Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. However here are some suggestions on troubleshooting and repairing a P0128 OBD-II code:
Verify coolant strength & level
Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.
Verify proper engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
Verify proper intake air temperature (IAT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
If the above items check out good, replace the thermostat
If Nissan vehicle, check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), as the ECM may need to be reprogrammed to correct the P0128 code



These codes are telling you that the engine temperature is not sufficient. This can be caused by a faulty coolant sensor,air in the cooling system,or a faulty computer.
The engine should run at 190 F & higher when warmed up. Scan the computer system to view engine temperature.

2008 range rover sport my thermostat indicator goes from cold to normal , then it goes lows cold and keeps changing


the coolant tempurature sensor may be bad. it sense temp. of engine. if bad it will send wrong info, to pcm. check the wiring to sensor also. ( CTS ). it could be the guage but i do not think so. g00d-day ! if all fails change thermostat.

OBD2 Engine dash indicator light on, engine fan running faster, engine temperature guage drops to normal range when moving and near top of hot zone when car is standing at idle. I'm getting a P1299...


That code means cylinder head over temp and has nothing to do with the coil. Check for proper coolant level first. May also be blocked coolant passages in the cylinder head but unlikely. Or a faulty temp sensor

It is much more likely you are low on coolant or you have an air bubble trapped in the cooling system. You should bleed the cooling system to get any trapped air out and make sure it is full of coolant.

P0128 thermostat range performance is the diagnosis when diagonstic check is done. The check eng. light goes off when battery is disconnected but comes on again after a few days. Pls. advise solution....


P0128 indicates that the car doesn't "think" it is warming up quickly enough. So either it really isn't getting warm enough, or the sensor indicating the temperature is bad. If it isn't getting warm enough the causes include a thermostat stuck open, low coolant, and a cooling fan that is running when it shouldn't be.

Keep in mind that many cars have two coolant temp sensors. One for the computer, and one for the temp gauge. Make sure you are working with the correct one.

hi if on engine starting and warmed you have no problems and no warning/malfunction light showing ? then i would suspect that trouble points to the engine coolant temperature sensor it tells the ecu to provide excess/choke to simplify? fuel as engine is cold so in simple theory you are trying to start with no choke as it was on old carburettor engines if you are old enough to remember ?? (joke) it was much simpler in those days however check the sensor and its plug is clean/secure and wires are ok ? when sensor works your engine fires up and runs withslight increase revs till warmed then settles to idle revsas specified in h/book this sensor is not the temp sensor that works the temp indicator guage it is a seperate sensor and larger screwed into either cyl head or block on the side hope this helps good luck

The temperature guage measures the coolant temperature, not the oil temperature -- the normal range is indicated on the guage.

Check your coolant.

Heater blowing cold air


My 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8s with 55,000 mi. blows cold air from the heater. Coolant not circulating in engine. Lower hose stays cool to touch. Both heater hoses cold. Changed thermostat - didn't fix it. Coolant not leaking or dirty. None in oil - no oil in radiator. Changed worn water pump belt - pump spins freely with no noise or resistance. Cooling fans come on after warm-up. Temperature gauge stays in normal range then jumps to hot and back again. Coolant good to 10 below - didn't freeze here yet. No other problems or repairs to car. Afraid to drive and make worse. Help!
