There should be a square hole in the tensioner that you would put a 3/8 or 1/2 socket wrench head into to use to pull the spring loaded tensioner away from the belt. Look for a single roller on the belt-Should be about 3-4 " diameter.
Hope this helps!

You don't take the tensioner off, you release the tension by moving the tensioner then slip the belt off the pulleys while keeping the belt tensioner released.

How to change altenator belt on 1996 dodge avenger

Their should be a belt tension pulley that that applies the tension to the belt. In most cases it will take a 1/2 drive rachet, or a socket the will go in side the pulley or a socket that go over a bolt. The you pull back to release the tension on the belt, and it will come off. Just remember how it came off and the new one back on the same way.

Changed the altenator now the tensioner will not go back in place

There may be 2 options on alternators for that truck, make sure the new alternator is exactly the same as the one you took off, they offered 2 differnt voltages for that year and you may have a different part. If thats not it, and you cant get belt back on check for proper belt routing. If tensioner will not flex back to get the belt on, you will need to buy a new belt tensioner, they do freeze up in the spring mechanism and will cause a problem with the belt coming off in the future anyway(wont allow for flex) if you can get the belt back on(assuming this is your problem). Sorry, question is a little vague on exactly where on the tensioner the problem lies.

Is there an adjuster for the altenator when changing belt on a 4cyl mystique x can a tensioner be placed incorrectly

No the tensioner stays locked into the one spot.If it is mounted flush into the engine block area its fine
Just pull the tensioner back enough to release the pressure from the belt to remove and to replace the belt

Change alternator

It's easy...
Disconnect the battery
Remove the supentine belt from the altenator pully, you can use a 3/8" drive breaker bar on the belt tensioner, just insert into the square slot on the tensioner and rotate it clockwise.
Remove the power wire and the harness
Remove the mounting bolts 1 under and 2 on the sides.

Just reverse the process to install the new altenator.
Make sure the supentine belt is in the proper position.
Make sure the battery is charged before starting, a drained battery can damage the FETs on the new altenator.

How to change altenator belt

loosen the bolts on the alternator. One is a pivot point the other slides along the mounting bracket to vary the tension on the belt.

Swing the alternator inward to loosen.
Remove the belt.
Install the new one.
Pull the alternator out to tighten the belt.
Hold in place and tighten the tension bolt.
Tighten the pivot bolt.

Correct belt tension: at the mid point on the belt along the longest run press down. It should move about a quarter of an inch of so.

I need to change out my serpentine belt on my 1996 dodge ram truck, and I cannot locate where to take off the tension I know it is somewhere under the altenator

it a pulley on the left side below the alternator. requires a 14mm? socket on a torque wrench or a socket wrench. requires some muscle to turn it to the right to release the tension

What tools it takes to take altenator off

if you get a 3/8 in socket wrench there is a square on the belt tensioner u can insert the scoket wrench into you will need a fairly long pipe to help with leverage then pull the wrench up and you will see the tensioner take off the tension off the belt so u can remove the belt but do not forget how the belt is routed this is the fun part ... autozone and kragen have special tools that you can rent to get the other bolts off of the alternator
