Question about 2007 Ford Edge SEL Plus

1 Answer

Front-end clunk 2007 FWD Ford Edge. Front-end clunk, left and right side. Initially, when wheel was unloaded, as in following a sunken manhole cover down from road surface. Now unloaded and in compression. Most recently, heard and felt app. between accelerator and brake in floorboard when entering road from a steep driveway, both wheels at the same time. Dealer replace left strut, strut mount, link to stabilizer bar - no effect. Ford district tech acknowledged noise, said it was "normal" and Ford has no cure. There is no discernible effect on steering or under acceleration/braking. Any ideas?

Probably not. The problem has been there since the vehicle was new. It's been replicated on other new Edges by the dealer. No effect on steering that I candiscern. But I'll check it out at my next roputine service at the dealer's. Thanks.

If you have high miles I would check all steering / suspension pivot points. Lower control arms, lower ball joints, inner tie rod sockets, and also the CV joints

You may want to raise the front wheels and check for loose wheel bearings by rocking the tire-excess rock the wheel bearing needs replaced. Also check the tie-rod ends-they should be stiff not easily moved. If they move easily replace the bad one. Also check the boots-two on each-on the CV joints-if they are torn or seeping grease you may want to have them checked.

Humming noise passengers side front end goes away when turning left

sounds like a wheel bearing in your right front. apparently, there are different types of bearing setups for this vehicle, depending on wheter it's 2 or 4 wheel drive. when you are turning, you unload the faulty bearing partially, and the noise quiets down. bet it gets noisier when you turn the other way. the noise probably also changes pitch with vehicle speed. get it checked, as this can cause more serious damage, and left alone for too long can allow the wheel to come off completely!

Jack up one side at a time and get a big bar or a strong 2x4, lift the wheel, have somebody lift while you peek at the inside and see if you can see something loose, grab the wheel and shake it left and right, It should tell you something, If, not, try the other side, Something gotta be clinking in there somewhere. You don't need a socket to get the bearing nut off, it is not tight, it is snugged up and then backed off, If it were put on tight, It would overheat in a few miles and smoke you out of the car and weld itself to the spindle/ axle, which ever you have there, most front drive cars don't have front end problems like 2 wheel drive cars, but they do have bearing problems. Hope this helps.
