I replaced fuel filter air filter spark plugs motor oil filter. The other things i can think of is my oxygen sensor or a lost vacum. I just seen my distributor cap needs replaced. Can a damaged distributor cap cause my problem ? or should i start with tranny fluid and gear oil. I mean am loosing a lot of power and wasting a lot of gas 17 gall only gives me 210 miles. ty

Have somebody rev the engine then go to the tailpipe and check if you have strong air comming out. if you have then its not the cat. if its the pump big chance is you cant even start the engine. check the air filter first then the fuel filter. i think youll find the problem there

My 1992 Toyota 4runner v6 while accelerating will build pressure I can feel in the gas pedal, then backfiring if I continue to accelerate. Sometimes I can avoid backfire by pushing clutch and shifting up...

Check the fuel pressure, and then see where youre at and if it is restricted from the pump or filter.
Next, try to see if you can get any codes out of the SUV. CEL can store any issues for quite some time, and it could be the MAF sensor, as that is very common with these.
I would also check into timing, it could be a few teeth off, pumping cylinders with fuel when they should be firing and causing this. And that is not good. At All.

Why does my 1992 4runner die when I put it in gear?

that could be an air/fuel problem ,does the engine rev ok when not in gear ? if it does then probably not air/fuel. the autobox speed sensor might be the fault have it checked at a auto trans repair shop

How do I get more power out of my 1992 4runner on a budget starting what I should do to the existing stock platform ?

The best thing you can do is replace the gear in your rear differential to a lower ratio gear. For example if you have a 3.42 to 1 axle ratio then you should go with a 3.73 to 1 axle ratio. It will cost you a $200 to $300 if you do the work yourself and it is fairly simple. Your engine, like most japanese engines, have very little torque and a lower rear axel ratio will help but it will also limit your high end speed. You can add a high flow intake with K & N air filter and a Flowmaster exhaust for about $250, $40 and $180 respectively. They will all help but really there is only so much you can do.

4 runner reverse slippin

The bands in your transmission are on their way out.. It doesn't do it (as bad) in 4lo because of the low gearing.
Time for a transmission rebuild or replacement.

Lack of Power

Take the car to your mechanics to check/change the oxygen sensor. I got the same problem to my 4Runner. You may want to check/change the gas filter as well and put a bottle of fuel additive along with your gas fill-up to boost performance and clean the fuel lines.

Sounds like you need gearbox oil (transmission oil in USA) .... check your levels and top it up.
