Regarding the voltage regulator, the alternator came with one in good condition. I took the alternator off the car back to Napa and the alternator tested fine. Putting it back on the car the second time the test reads NO power coming from alternator. I was logistic at a wiring schematic and noticed a battery like gaged cable running to the fuse box I tightened up that screw to the 175 amp main fuse and rechecked all fuses, still, NO GO...

The first time that I put in the new alternator, I had the battery fully charged and tested. During alternator installed on the car test, it read that the battery volts at first while car was running are 11.2, then while test it Amp's dropped all the way down to 8.6. All while being tested, then Alt test failed not giving any power back...

When I have the jumper cables attached to battery and I turn key, there is not a battery light. I will get a test light and check the small wires in the back of Alternator. What about the starter? Should I jacked car up and check starter out???

  • RODRIGUEZ777 May 30, 2009

When I put the key in and turn it, I do NOT have a Battery light. I will get a tester and find out if I am getting 12 volts from the little wires in the back of Alternator. What about ignition switch??? How do I test that.

I do not even know how to rate anyone. Thanks for the methinks.

I'm not sure either since I've never been on the other end of this process. But, there should be some icons somewhere on this screen (hands, I think) -- I believe there is a way you can change the rating -- just start clicking and see what you get.

It sounds like you have enough experts helping you. So, I'll leave it in their capable hands.

But, I have to stand up for pippall who is giving you his expertise & time for free, wanting to be helpful, and you rate him a "thanks for trying" -- this is a 75 point rating which is not very useful to a fixya expert. Pippall's suggestion is right on target -- it's not the solution but you haven't even given him a chance. Methinks you are expecting way too much...

based on your voltage reading u never had any output from the alternator, does tthe battery light in the dash work when u turn the key to on? if not the alternator will not charge, also these models had a problem with the igntion switch, not the key but the starter switch,do you have 12 volts to one of the small wires at the connector to the voltage regulator?

Will a blown fuse keep a dodge the coda 2000 with a 4.7 from starting the fuses 140 amp fuse that runs from the battery to the alternator

Hi Kelly, IM AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

YES Kelly that fuse will keep the vehicle from starting, If you install a new fuse and it blows again you most likely have a shorted alternator, to check it out, simple unhook the power wire from the back of the alternator, install a new fuse and if it does not blow again then replaced the alternator with a new one. CAUSION: Please be very careful not to let the power wire from the alternator touch anything be cause it can melt something. Best way is to unhook the battery, take the wire off and wrap it with a towel then hook the battery back up and do your test with the fuse. Hope this helps and please visit my auto-repair-website:

2000 Ford Ranger is killing alternators immediately after install

the best way to test an alternator is with a load test-partstores dont do that--battery may still have a bad cell even tho it tested good--an alternator can burn up charging a completely dead batt--make sure batt reads at 12.6volts and no less-----if it reads say at 12.3 its only 50% charged!

93 Grand Marquis battery light stays on

First I would have to ask who is "they" that say your alternator is good? If you are talking about parts store counter people, they probably wouldn't know a bad alternator if it bit them in the face. Also, has the alternator been tested on the vehicle? Or are you removing it and taking it somewhere to get it tested? If you are removing it, this is NOT a good test.
It may tell you if the alternator can produce voltage, but does not tell you how it is going to act under actual (load) conditions. It also does not test the circuits in the car that are required to make the alternator work.

If the battery light is staying on, the alternator is not charging...PERIOD!
Now, it may be the alternator is bad or it may be that the circuits in the car that go to the alternator are bad. In either case, proper diagnosis will be required to find the cause of your problem.

Stop by any good parts store (Autozone, Advance, etc...) and have them do a FREE charging system test and LOAD test your battery. You'll find the culprit.

Battery keeps draining

if your battery died while driving and the car cut off while your driving,, your problem is from your alternator!!!,, on a normal working car, you can start, remove ther battery terminals and the car would still run cause the alternator will be powering the car. In your case the alternator isnt working and the car was working on battery power therefore when the battery went dead the car cut off.. Your alternator need \s to be charging between 13.5 and 14.2 volts.. as little as 10 volts will keep the vehicle running.. I'd suggest you have the alternator replaced.

89 thunder bird. Not charging

Did you hook up the wires from the correctly? Some batteries have the pos and neg reversed on the mounting posts. You may need to double check battery cables and alternator cables are charging. If you have a volt meter, you can perform more diagnostic tests on your own. Like testing output of alternator to ensure you are putting out the correct polarity.

91 thunderbird not charging

Dear annieek,
I have the same problem on my 91 Bird. I have checked with a friend that owns a repair shop. He says when you turn the switch on you need to have the Alt. light to come on before you start the car, if it does not come on (mine does not) it is a wiring problem. That light must come on before the car is started in order to "excite" the Alternator. I am in the process now of taking the dash apart to find the problem of why the light is not coming on. More info later. This may give you a starting point.
