My BMW 325i 2500cc has just developed a loud clunking noise from the rear which you can actually feel, it even does it while out of gear.

Possibilities
  • Exhaust system might have loose rubber hangers.
  • Rear end drivetrain malfunction.
  • Prop shaft rubber gibo (coupler) worn out or broken bolts.
  • Suspension components worn or broken fastening hardware.
  • Loose stuff in rear trunk (jack, spare tire, ect.).

Rattle

Jack up the car when exhaust is cold, grab any heat shields to see if they are loose. You can also tap them with something to see if they vibrate. It's very common for the heat shield to rust and a corner can break free, making the annoying rattle. I've fixed this with a coat hanger cut to secure the loose shield, or a screw installed to hold it tight.

Sounds like a fuel problem , have you changed the fuel filter in a while ? could be the knock sensor or the knock sensor module needs to be replaced.

Can anyone tell me how to locate the cabin filter? also how to replace it.

If its a 96-05 then its under the hood near the back of the engine compartment. You twist the 3 plastic clips 90 degrees and it comes off. Then replace the filter.

if the problem is with the knob being lose inside the radio, it can be repaired. I have been able to successfully repair every one that came into my dealership. most dealers will not attempt a repair. another alternative is to call a reputable audio installer/retailer and see if they will repair it.

I had the same thing happen, it was the wheel bearing. It's still costly, it has to be pressed in and old one out.
