Drove car 8 to ten miles and heat light came one got home and water or coolant boiled over into overflow tank

Drove it about 8 to ten miles today and the hot light came on got it home and the anti freeze had bubbles into over flow tank

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck closed.

Possible head gasket blown.Firstly check to see if you coolant fan is working.

Leaking coolant after radiator replacement


If you are talking about the reservoir that hose is the overflow hose.
Its possible the shop did not release all of the air pockets from the system and some coolant came out with the air bubbles.
The tank should be about half full hot and cold.

I have replacing a lot of parts on the coolant system. Today I drove approx 8 miles round trip and when I stopped the reservoir was boiling.


Hi Brenda,first check the thermostat,could be not opening all the way,or your water pump is bad and not circulating to keep engine cool.You can do more looking,go to wear water pump is and see if you see coolant any where or leaks on pavement below while parked.

The car was overheating i checked all hoses and replaced the thermostat the radiator it still is ovrheating and the water is boiling in the overflow tank


Answer could be a faulty thermostat,or it could be a sign that your head gasket is about to blow ,or last of all your timing could be out of sync.

Answer 2 from Inventus: It means your cooling system is funtioning properly. In a system having a coolant recovery tank, coolant in the radiator is always up to the brim, hot or cold. There is negligible or no air space. When coolant in the radiator expands sufficiently due to warming from the engine, it will squeeze past the pressure cap's bottom seal and flow into the recovery tank. (If no provision for such expansion was present, the expansion would rupture the radiator or your hoses.) Only coolant within the radiator is under pressure, and because of this pressure (together with the elevated boiling point that the "anti-freeze" permits), it normally does not boil. But once past the pressure cap's bottom seal, the overflow is at atmospheric pressure and therefore boils.
This boiling is usually unnoticed after a short, i.e., local, trip because the cooler coolant already in the recovery tank quenches it. But after some highway driving the influx of more hot overflow heats up all the coolant in the recovery tank to the (unpressurized, i.e., "natural") boiling point.
As the engine cools when shut off, the contracting coolant in the radiator sucks back coolant from the recovery tank. Fluid in the recovery tank should never be below the "full hot" or "full cold" marks, lest air be sucked in.

Your cooling fans are not turning on. It is not normal for your overflow tank to boil like that. It is true that your radiator is overflowing into the reserve tank, but that means yourr adiaotor is boiling. Check for blown fuses or relays for your cooling fans. IF theya re fine. run your engine for about 15 minutes and drive. When you temp level is at normal operating temp open your hood with the engine runing and see if your fans are on. If they are, then you may have a bad thermostat or a plugged radiator, or a bad water pump. If the fans are not on, get your cooling fan switch replaced if your car has one. Check your temp sending sensor

2 blocks is fast to reach boiling.Take the cap off the overflow tank and fill it right to the very top with coolant.Start the car and watch for a steady stream of bubbles.If you see a steady stream you do need a head gasket or have a crack somewhere in a combustion camber.

first of all, was the water on the passenger side from the air conditioner or a leak (what color was the fluid?)-the cap has to be tight, otherwise it will not hold pressure, so that has to be checked before you set off again-push down as you turn the cap clockwise, and it will not hurt to have water in the system (it actually transfers heat better than antifreeze) but it has a much lower boiling point, so the cap has to be tight. Pay attention to the temperature gauge and do NOT overheat it-it is an aluminum engine and they do not tolerate excessive heat. Take your time, no AC (although the AC being on can keep a good cooling system more stable since the radiator fan is forced on when the AC is running, so you can, within reason, experiment)-no matter what, just don't let it run hot-not worth it.

Check that the fan is working. You do not give a make or model, so it could be the thermostatic switch, fuse or relay for an electric fan or the viscous clutch if it has that type of fan. If the water bubbles out or you see bubbles either in the radiator or the overflow, you might have a head gasket leaking into the coolant system.

if you have cold air from your heater vents they you have air in your system. When your thermastat stuck you probably lost a lot of you coolant and if you didnt add any more i am sure thats your issue. just low on coolant now. When it goes to the heater core, there is nothing left to pump around the engine.
