Hard time getting into first and reverse /clutch only 2 yrs old

Having hard time getting transmission on chevy cavalier to go into first or reverse

    thought maybe the clutch cables may be worn and need replacement

    the first and reverse gears will not go in from time to time. i pump the clutch a few times and then it takes and works for a while but the problem keeps coming back

The transmission needs to be rebuilt. There are worn parts inside of it.

Internal problems. Reverse uses more pressure to apply the clutches than forward clutches do.
Could be planetary gears, sprag, burned clutches, broken sealing rings or lip seals.
All these are internal so it will need to come apart

Hi Jenna,
That means the Clutch plate (Disc) is very near burnt out (finished), adjustment which is Automatic is not possible when the clutch pedal is depressed. Get to a mechanic soon. Otherwise you will have to pay for towing too.

I have a 98 Chevy cavalier , it has Manuel transmission, it will only go in 3rd and 4th gear, what could be the problem


It could obviously be the tranny is gone, but you would want to make sure you have enough clutch flood and the clutch is fully engaging. I had a leak in my 98 cavalier clutch fluid, and when it got low, it would not fully engage the clutch, simply making it hard to get into gear. Its DOT3 fluid. If so try reversing a little bit and gently tiring to get into gear. I believe 1st and 2nd gear share the same gear selection fork inside the tranny. Drain fluid and look for metal.

Could be, or the clutch disc. First gear and reverse do not have syncro gears, the others do. So the transmission and engine have to be "disconnected" to allow shifting into first and reverse.

Check the transmission fluid level 1st, if that is ok then the transmission has a failed reverse clutch band, to replace this part means a transmission rebuild must be performed.

Common problem probably a 4L60E transmission The low and reverse clutches are the same ones The forward clutches are another set and then there are the 3-4 clutches in another pack. So you probably burn out the forward clutches or could be a stuck valve in the valve body. Time for a transmission specialist.

HI look under car in between transmission and engine look for sign of clear fluid like brake fluid.If you don't find any replace your clutch master cylinder.

Need 2 know how to replace a clutch in a 1997 chev cavalier


in front wheel drive cars it can be a real pain to do. you pretty much have to pull the whole motor out to get enough room to get the old clutch out and get the new one in. the hard part is getting the room, when you have it, all you need to do is disconnect the slave cylinder, and unbolt the clutch from the flywheel. when the new clutch is on and you are putting the motor and transmission back together you want to be careful not to ruin the new throw-out bearing.
