If your gas tank is cracked or has a hole in it, you have to drain the tank, remove the gas tank and replace it, or have it repaired (if possible). If the gas tank is just leaking from the top and dripping along the side and to the bottom, you will still have to empty the gas tank, and remove it to get a good look at the condition of the gasket. It is not uncommon for these gaskets to become cracked or fragile over time because of the harsh chemicals and cleaning agents used in unleaded gas. If you do decide to have the gas tank removed, I would recommend replacing the fuel pump and fuel filter if your car has high mileage. Please rate this response if you found this helpful.

If you can drain the tank and vent it so that there is no vapour present it is possible to rub the metal back and use a glass fibre matting with the correct resin and overlay the bad area.

Once it is set it should hold for the life of the car

DO NOT USE AN ANGLE GRINDER AS THIS WILL CAUSE SPARKS AND YOU MAY END UP BURNT OR DEAD

When filling up the gas tank of my 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, it releabsed a few cups of gasoline from somewhere at the bottom of the car. I'm not sure why??? It hasn't leaked since.

Both the fuel pump and gas gage sending units are located inside the tank. They are accessed by a plate and gasket on top of the fuel tank.
If the gasket leaks or the hoses leading to the vent leak, your condition would happen. Unfortunately to confirm the tank would have to be dropped(removed) which requires all the fuel to be removed first. Not a pleasant nor easy task.

Fuel pump leak

Looks like it may be a fuel return line from the fuel manifold . It may be split or loose . Probably both . Get a new section of fuel hose and some good clips and replace it

Car runs rough n stalls at times

fuel filter is bad or you have a dirty fuel tank go to auto zone get a bottle of sea foam and thats the name on the bottle fill your gas tank up to half a tank and pour the sea foam in the gas tank then drive it until you have refill it again now it will run rough after you put this in what its doing is breaking down all the trash and particules in the bottom of the gas tank and its clogging the filter after you do this replace the fuel filter and either way your solving the problem

1996 civic smell gas all the time ,when driving, when parked, and never see any leaks.

You have to check for leaks under the car. Look at the gas tank, usually they leak but wont make it to the ground. If you see that the tank has any wet spots coming from the top around to the bottom, then the leak is at the sending unit. Follow the fuel lines up to the engine, looking for wet spots. Under the hood, find the fuel filter check this for wet spots, then check all the injectors, these can leak at the top or bottom, usually top. Best way to tell is start the car and then check the injectors. If they are leaking it could be a drip or spray.

Gas leaks out of the bottom, but only when I gas up. It doesn't leak at any other time, but it is preventing me from putting gas in the car. I took it to a named brand mechanic shop close to my home...

Its leaking from the tank?
You might need some new tubing.
If there is a hole in the tank try to find it and use putty/epoxy to seal it.
This is a simple leak, there is no need for an entire new fuel system

We have a 2001 sportage the gas tank is seaping on the top. Recently it started to start harder( turns over longer before firing). Today the check engine light came on and the car misses like its starving...

I dont know why gas would be "seeping". if its leaking, thats a problem. have the fuel pressure checked, if its low, the tank will have to come down for possible fuel pump replacement, and the leak found and corrected at the same time (possibly the fuel line is leaking back there?)

Fuel tank leaking how to solve problem gas is not pouring out but is seeping through bottom of tank

I don't think you will have any luck sealing this from the outside.
Removing the tank (preferably empty), filling it with water and soldering all of the seams (if metal) or replacing it if of plastic.

This could be sloppy manufacturing showing up late, stress from being slammed underneath (is there signs of dents or scrapes?) or if metal, it might be rusting through which is pretty much a death sentence for it.
Pouring some (a cup or so) methanol, pure ethanol or a commercial product intended for that use, into your tank now and then will cause condensation to bond to the gasoline where it will pass though the system and out.
