Question about 2001 Pontiac Aztek
Tried to start in the morning and it would not turn over it seems like it was completely dead lights would not turn on nor radio. Also could not get key back out of ignition. Check later and radio was on but still would not start and still can't get key out of ignition.
Hi I am Vortash it sounds as if your alternator is not charging your battery ?.
The way to check is charge your battery and replace on the vehicle . With the use of a multileter or digital meter measure the voltage of the battery before you put it on the car .. should be approx 12 to 13 volts ( now we are assuming that the low battery was what was stopping it from starting hopefully charging the battery has the car going again . ) check the output from the alternator by putting the leads of the multimeter across the terminals and rev the engine gentley the voltage should rise to 14 to 15 volts and as rev the engine it should rise and fall on the meter . another simple way is to put a bulb across the battery and rev the car it should get brighter and dimmer as you rev .. If you ddn't get that happen check the drive belts are tight on the alternator and the cable sockets are well secured and clean .you should be able to rtetract your key now as the solenoid should be working ( I gather it is an Automatic so it needs to be in park to release the key or in some cases neutral .or press the foot brake ?. ) If the alternator is not charging and you get no reaction from the meter or lamp it may only need the brushes replacing and most modern alternators have a mudule that unscrews and it has the brushes and the rectifier on it so purchasing one of these and replacing it should cure the problem providing the windings are not burnt out and that is very unlikely .. One other thing it may be and perhaps you should check this first ? is a bad earth between the battery and the engine . There is an earth strap attached to the engine and on to the body and the negative side of the battery ( providing you dont have a positive earth vehicle then it is reversed ) is attached to the body of the car undo this and claean around the area it is attached to with a wire brush and the end of the cable and re-tighten
Check all your fuses in the fuse box and especially the large fusible links with a meter if needed . After you have done all this you have done what most none skilled ( ie : not a car Mechanic ) people can do and it is time to call the garage if you still have no luck.. I wish you all the best with this problem and hope you manage toget it sorted soon regards Vortash
