Most thermostats are located in or near the intake manifold area. Locate your upper radiator hose, then from the hose/radiator connection, follow the hose backwards to where it connects to. The goose neck or mating part, has to be removed. The thermostat is usually located inside the port. You may have to remove other covers and or parts to gain access to the goose neck assembly. You also have to let the car cool and drain the coolant before performing this task.

When the car is cool, inspect both of the upper and lower radiator hoses. Look for cracking, dry rotting conditions and also check to see if the hoses feel excessively soft when squeezing them. They should be semi firm with good recoil. When the car is still warm, visually check to see if any of the hoses have areas of swelling. If you observe any of these conditions, replace the hoses. If you live in an area of the country where harsh weather conditions occur, I would recommend buying a high quality hose, like Goodyear, they cost more, but may prevent you from becoming stranded. Radiator hoses should be replaced about every 24 months or as required by routine observation. Please rate this response if you found this helpful.

The thermostat is really easy to locate. when you open up your hood and look at the radiator you will see the upper radiator hose coming out of the radiator on the top. follow this hose to the engine. and where the hose attaches to the engine is where the thermostat is it will be behind the flange that the radiator hose is attached to. the thermostat houseing is usually held on by 2 or 3 bolts. hope this answers your question

My 97 lumina keeps over heating i changed the water pump thermastat and radiator cap and bled the system of all the air only water comes out when i losen the screw on the top hose next to the thermastat...

It could still have air in the system, or a leaking head gasket is putting cylinder compression into the cooling system. You can have engine compression leaking into the radiator without having coolant in the engine cylinders.
