Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Radio on VW Jetta shorts out

My radio on my VW Jetta (1997) keeps "shorting" out - it will play, but then the radio turns off (there is a little sound, then the lights go off), and then turns on shortly after. It happens more often the louder the volume is turned up, but it will also do it when the volume is on level "0" or "1." Do you have any idea what this could be and how I can fix it? Thanks!

This is most likely a bad ground from the radio to the chasis. The louder you play it the more current it draws and the lower the voltage drops thru the resistive (bad) ground. When volatge drops below a certain point the radio shuts off.

Pull the radio out -- tell me what kind of wires & harnesses you see.

I would give VW a call.

Have you checked the fuse box? There should be a dedicated radio fuse.

Cheers,

I need radio code for 1997 vw jetta radio model# 1hm 035 180 B Serial # 12247

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must have the security anti-theft code for your VW radio from the car manufacturer! For VW radio the sequence of programming is:
1. Push simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys until on the screen will appear "1000" displayed.
2. Release keys. No more push on "SCAN" and "RDS" keys because otherwise number "1000" will be considered as first safe code attempt.
3. By the #1 key you will set up the first safe code digit.
4. By the #2 key you will set up the second safe code digit.
5. By the #3 key you will set up the third safe code digit.
6. By the #4 key you will set up the four-th safe code digit.
7. Then push again simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys for confirm this safe code. On the screen will be displayed "SAFE" notice. Release keys! For few seconds a radio frequence will be displayed. The radio is now ready for use!

Radio code stuck in safe mode

I had this same problem when I had to disconnect the radio. If you take it to your local VW dealership they will give you the codes for free. Keep them though for when you have to redo it again. Every car is different.
