Question about 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan
Van runs and all gauges on dash work with check engine light on. when abs light comes on, entire dashboard quits could problem be one of the control modules? if so which one is it and where is it located?
I had a problem with the dashboard indicators for 3 years. Kept all flluids properly leveled and changed, etc. while I put on an estimated 35000 miles on while driving blind, because I refused to pay Chrysler 1500 to 2000 to experimentally repair my vehicle.
A saint at a salvage yard on day said it was the thermostat control module (The panel controlling defrost, rear wiper, and climate control above the cup holders between the two front seats). I replaced it for 30 bucks (used) in 5 minutes, and low and behold, everything works again.
Turns out they use the control module as a pass through for a portion of the main harness. The module can short out (for what ever reason) and must create noise on the Comm wires, either directly or indirectly, causing the BCM and PCM stop speaking to each other. That in turns shuts down the dashboard.
You can test this without a new module, by simply pulling the module (4 screws: 2 on top, two on bottom behind small plastic cover plate), and disconnecting the wiring cable. You don't even need to disconnect the power, and thermostat dial cable. After disconnecting, start you vehicle, and see if your guages behave properly. If they do, replace the module.
