You are going to have to replace it to get it to work like it did. if you live in an area with lots of auto salvage yards (junkyards) call around for what you need. this part should not be expensive, probably under $20, but you can ask if they say they have it. if you want to make sure you get the right part take the old one with you. you will have to remove the hood release cable. figure out how it attaches to the mechanism, probably some screws hold it to the car, but the cable itself is the part you want to take off first while it is still attached to the car. there should be little bit of adjustment in the way it attaches, screw holes little bit bigger than screws and that should give you some up and down adjustment. you want it high enough to catch and hold firmly, but not so high that it hits the latch before the hood is down all the way. if you need a little more than it gives you to get it to work right you can always drill the holes a little longer, but you don't want them any bigger around. i tell you to get another hood latch because you would be wasting your time doing all this to a latch mechanism that's partly rusted away. the partly gone mechanism is just going to slop around and it won't give you a trustworthy operation, will beat your hood up (as you have seen) and could even let the hood fly open while you are going down the road. you can put some grease on the new latch around the area where the cable moves after you are done getting it aligned and it should give you years of service. hope that helps

Spray inside the edge of the hood near where the latch is with WD-40 or other lubricant. The latch is spring loaded and occasionally will stick. Once open, spray the whole mechanism really well. If unsuccessful, post back for other options.
Hope this helps.

If you felt the normal tension on the hood release, your cable is good. Try banging the center of the hood with your fist a few times (firm but not too hard) This will occasionally work to get the hood to pop up. Then you can lubricate the hinges and spring.

I cant get my hood to latch on my 1997 lincoln town car. Ive tried slamming it down multiple times and ive replaced the latch. I dont know what to do. Please someone help me??????

Look and see where the latch arm (on the hood) is setting on the latch(on the body) This is only an estimate, as you lower it and look, then line it up by sight. Have a flash light. The latch can be adjusted some by loosening the bolts. If they still don't line up, Use a hammer and bend the latch arm over to get it aligned. It only bends left and right. Not front to back.

Hood on 2001 town car will not open ? any idea's on how to get it open when release will not do anything & what could be wrong with it pull's but does not relase ................

have someone press on the hood as you pull the release. You may have to shake the hood up and down to get the release to work. after you get the hood open, spray the latch with lube to free it up.

My hood release latch is disengaged and i cant open my hood i need to know how to open it with out the wire

you will have to try to get to the hood release at the latch from either under the car on the front side of the latch or try to get to the release mechanism from the front of the car through the grill area if its accessible, you will have to get inventive to release the latch.

Where is the latch for opening the hood ?

The red release latch is down under the dash on the extreme left hand side. A release tongue should stick out from the radiator grill when the latch is opened. Pulling on this tongue will release the hood When you open the hood the angle is initially restricted to about 45 degrees which is fine for minor jobs. If you need extra room, the left hand hinge has a latch pin which can be swung inwards to allow the hood to move up to about 50 degrees. Releasing the second latch pin on the right hand hinge allows the hood to go vertical. You will have to release the left hand hinge latch pin to close the hood.
