98 Ford Windstar Won't shift out of 1st gear

I was driving fine, made it to my destination. Then got back on the highway and the van would NOT shift past 60mph and Rpm gage would NOT pass 4rpms. It would not shift, and would just rev higher. Check engine light would flash. Which the lights been on and off since I have had it, it needs O2 sensor. I had to get back off highway and get it towed because then it would not get any higher then 20 MPH. HELP! Don't wanna scrap if its an easier fix than the Tranny going out.

Low tranny fluid level .check throttle valve control linkages.could be out of adjustment.worn or damage governor.or band and in put clutch problems.low pump pressure.dirty or sticking shift valves .also have it scan that model vechicle had a vechicle speed sensor.if it didnt work it would cause the torque converter not to lock up.multiply torque.torque converter just free wheel no over drive.

The 1st thing u need to do is have the system scanned for electronic trouble codes (trans is electronically controlled) that explain the way the trans is acting, this is the 1st step in this type of problem

this car does not have a shift module, the transmission control is part of the engine control module which is known as the PCM, from 20 years as a Ford dealer tech I can tell u this is not the problem, have the trouble code test run as i suggested.

O/D Off light goes off and on

the overdrive is the 4th gear. considering that it may not be an issue with your computer switching gears to fourth but an issue with the transmission itself. this light could be a signal instead of and engine warning light where the engine is fine but the transmission isnt.

98 WINDSTAR WILL NOT CHANGE OUT OF 1ST GEAR

usually there is a sensor on the transmission that controls the shifting. if it gave up on you your transmission won't change gears...

another possibility is the filter....

if it has never been changed it might stop the transmission from shifting...

95 ford windstar 3.8 v6 transmission, no 3rd gear

First thing is to check the fluid level in the transmission, most vehicles have to be running at engine operating temp either in P or N, check your owners manual. Assuming your fluid is where it should be, that vehicle you have sorry to tell you are notorious for transmission failures, by what you described looks like your going to have to replace the trany or rebuild it, either way its not a cheap fix. My advise if the van is in really good condition put a used trany in it and trade it in for something else. You can look anywhere online about customer/ owner feed backs on 88-98 windstar vans and how bad the transmissions are on those Ford didn't get smart till 99 or 00 when they redisgned the drive train. If you keep driving it the way it is the trany will completely fail leaving you on the side of the road somewhere.

Van drops into 1st gear after 15 miles

What does the speedometer do when this happens? If it goes dead at the same time you need a Vehicle Speed Sensor which is mounted to the transmission. It tells the ECM what your speed is and without the input from the sensor, the computer assumes the van isn't going very fast and locks in 1st gear.
