I need to replace the thermostat on my 2003 Trailblazer

It looks like I have to remove everything mounted to drivers side of the engine to get to the thermostat. Can you tell me what all needs to be removed and/or is there an easier way?

Most if not all repair manuals for vehicles these days covers replacing the thermostat. Your best solution is to puchase one of these manuals for your vehicle from the local automotive supply store (autozone, petboys.. )

Now while i don't know your particular vehicle, i can make the safe assumption that you will need to remove the pump (or housing on the pump) to swap out the thermostat. Mostly this involves removing the housing bolts, and simlpy removing the outlet block, and replace the thermostat / gasket (if required) and replace everything.. .

again, this is not a howto guide, just from recollection. Your best, and safest bet is to get the manual, and follow it. They are usually pretty easy to replace inless you have one of those foriegn jobbies..

Where is the thermostat located?

Assuming you have the 6 cylinder, the thermostat is on the drivers side of the engine just behind the alternator. Here is a view with alternator removed.

How to put a colling sensor in a 2002 traliBlazer

Lucky you! In 2006 the location was changed and is very difficult. In 2002 your engine coolant sensor is located right above your thermostat on the drivers side. While you're in there replace your thermostat also. Going through the wheel well is too difficult. I find that removing the alternator and alternator bracket, along with the battery and tray gives you compelte access to both the sensor and thermostat. Check your serpentine belt too since you do have to remove it, good time to change it.

I am changing the drivers side carrier housing! I pulled the wheel, and c.v. axle, I removed all of the bolts holding the Housing to the engine, and removed the driveshaft. It will not fit through the hole...

you will need to remove the steering rack, frame crossmembers, and motor mount stud nuts.then CAREFULLY lift the engine up by the oil pan with a jack. The jack must be positioned on the passenger side of the oil pan.Or you can remove the oil pan.

How to replace a thermostat on a 2003 chevy trailblazer with a 4.2 engine. One source says it is off the top radiator hose, and another says it comes from the bottom hose right behind the alternator. If it...

The thermostat is under the alternator.

If you have a memory saver to keep radio & PCM settings, install it now.

Remove negative battery cable from battery. Remove positive cable from alternator and disconnect harness plug from alternator.

Remove accessory belt noting how it is installed for later reinstallation.

Remove engine lifting hook in front of alternator.

Remove (3) bolts holding alternator on.

Drain coolant from radiator (may want to start this as first step as it takes a while). Loosen pressure cap to aid in system draindown.

Remove radiator hose from thermostat housing.

Remove two bolts from housing and remove from engine.

Reinstall is reverse keeping in mind the following:

Cleanliness counts where thermostat housing seals to engine.
Thermostat spring should point into engine.
If the thermostat has a bleed port, it should go to the 12 o'clock position (up).

Replace thermostat, Used to be the simplest job on an auto. Am I correct that I have to remove the Alternator to get to it? Meaning its down on the block itself on the drivers side. Ouch

Yes sir, you are correct. The thermostat is behind the alternator. Be very careful any time you are working on or near the fan clutch assembly. It has hidden wires, It looks like a regular viscous fan clutch but is computer controlled and is realatively easily damaged. For your own reference - Be prepared in the near future to replace it and the air switching valve due to a check engine light.

P0172 and P0128 Error Code 2003 Trailblazer 4WD

PO172 means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a rich condition (too little oxygen in the exhaust). I would replace the thermostat first. The computer could be injecting too much fuel because it thinks it never gets to operating temperature. That may keep the light off.
