Likely you have a leak in the system...Most common place to leak is at the front compressor seal. 134 is "thinner" than R12 and finds many ways to escape. If you do not have a good set of a/c gauges and an evacuation pump I suggest you bring it to a shop to have it repaired or you will be wasting your $$.

How do you know for sure you need a recharge of refrigerant again?

If this is the case, then you probably have a leak. If you had just recharged, probably the caps to the valves are too loose, allowing the refrigerant to escape, as has found to be a common encounter, according to this very hand, diagnostic article:
http://yourhandymanzone.com/Your_Handyman_Zone_How_To_Pages_Vehicle_Car_Zone_Cars_Trucks_Vans_Air_Conditioning_System_Prevent_Waste_Of_Refrigerant_Preventable_Leak.htm

This should help.

It sounds like you have a leak in the system somewhere. Common places to leak in the system is the O rings where the hoses connect to the A/C compressor and the O ring seal at the compressor where the clutch is. The stop leak that is in the market will not work in this case since the A/C needs to be recharged within 2 weeks of being recharged.
Best thing is to take it to a A/C repair shop and have them to a leak check and replace the parts that needs to be replaced. A bad oil seal will not get better and the system needs to be vacuumed out to take any moisture out of the system also.
Good luck and hope this helps.

2003 Chevy Impala. Changed the door remote & still not working

If your dealer is nice they may charge about a half hour of labor. Most charge about an hour. I would guess $50-$100.

2003 chevy impala ls starts then stalls

I have replaced the radiator in my 2003 Chevrolet Impala LS. The car started running hot and shut down. Took it to a radiator shop and found a crack in the radiator. I have replaced 2 thermostats in the car already. I noticed water running from under my car today and it seems it was coming back out of the overflow. I am stumped as to what is going on with this car.
