How to read the fault codes on 2.3 16V trans sport 95
same as 3.8 just circut between the to upper right holes on the diagnostic contact?

you have a obd2 it has 16 data link connector you have to use scanner to get the obd1 system have 12 data link connectors..the top two at far right is where you put jumper wire to retrieve code.

If there are no codes set, the light will be off. Some less expensive code readers will not read all codes, such as trans codes and ABS codes. Perhaps there is a code set you have not been able to read.

Have you read the codes? Note cheap scanners may not read transmission codes, so get someone whose scanner does to read them. When did you last change trans fluid and filter? Ever?

I have a 1995 Pontiac trans sport. I was driving and van all of a sudden died. Some people a telling me it is the transmission others say maybe not because they dont understand why my front tires have...

The Engine and Automatic Transmission (not applicable to manual transmissions) in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM and TCM (Power Train Control Module, Transmission Control Module). When a problem like this or other drive-ability related problems occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. Also always check fuel pressure for correct spec for your make and engine type.

Hello, I own a 2001 town and Country Chrysler Mini van. After a computer test the following codes came back. do you know what they mean and how much I should be charged. codes are PO135 PO 700 ...

Codes are...P0135 = Upstream heated oxygen sensor circut fault. (bank 1)
Sensor is located closest to the firewall mounted on the exhaust manifold.
Remedy is usually to replace sensor. sensor =$50-$70 range + labor @ ?? $perhour
Can be easily replaced by the home mechanic with a special socket.

Code P0700 = Automatic transmission fault detected.
Generic code leading to the root cause which is the next code....

Code P0740 = Torque converter clutch circut malfunction.
Below is an exerpt from from a chrysler mechanic familiar with this code:

"This code says that the lock-up of the two vanes of the torque converter is not occurring when the speed of the van goes over 45 or so mph. It may be that this is the case or it may be that the type of trans you have doesn't have the lock up feature. The lock up feature is a gas-saving option that totally attaches the vanes so there is no slippage once you are cruising, instead of maybe a 5-10% slippage. Many cars have trans's that don't do this so it isn't a major issue. But if you notice that there is something new in the way the rpm changes when you step on the gas when cruising (e.g. the engine rev will rise without a concomitant increase in the speed) then the lock up may be present and it isn't working. If it is missing there are two possibilities: the electrical connection to the lockup maybe open or the lockup may not be working itself. The former is an easy fix, the latter is not because it requires removing the trans and opening it up (very costly, you will never save that much gas in the future life of the van). Because I don't have any manuals about the trans's used in the van's after '98 you may have to ask a dealer whether this is a real problem or just a "phantom" code because your trans doesn't have the lock-up feature. I wouldn't get into trying to repair this if everything else with the trans is fine. You may just open another "can of worms." If you are under warranty then and don't have to pay for it then checking the electrical would be good. But I would be hesitant to letting them remove and open the trans to fix the lockup itself, even if Chrysler pays for it."

You be the judge if any of these codes warrant any repairs. If the van is running good, I would ignore them. oxygen sensors give false readings all the time whether they are good or bad.

What is the diagnostic code?

96 and newer is the OBD-2 scanner to use, for 95 and older gm vehicles go to this site for the codes--- heres how to read codes on 95 and older, The ALDL connector is on the driver side of the car by the steering column. Short the A and B pins together, which is the two pins in the upper right hand section of the plug. Make sure the key is on, but the engine is off. That will make the check engine light flash whatever codes are stored in the computer. You can use a paper clip to short the pins together. Hope this helps. to read codes, 3 flashes of check engine light, then pause then 2 more flashes indicates problem code 32. thats how you read the codes. so have something to write them down so you can keep track of the codes.

May depend on manufacturer date.All domestic vehicles after 96 are OBD II.Some late production 95 models are OBD II. if your diagnostic connector is rounded oval shape its OBD II. If the diagnostic connector is rectangled it's OBD.

1996 ford explorer sport 4x4., the trans will not shift right.

the car is in whats called limp mode, it allows you to drive it to get it serviced.. most likely you have a shift soleniod that is bad.. you will need to get it to some one who can read the error codes..

It sounds like the trans has gone into "Limp In" mode. You may need to access the trans controller and look at fault codes. A Generic OBDII scanner may give you the codes. You could also try disconnecting the battery which will reset the trans controller. (however that is not a cure but it will verify the trans was in fault mode) The most common issues I've seen have been with the "Input" and "Output" Turbine Speed Sensors. They are both mounted on the trans case (External). The input is towards the front and the output is near the rear.
