01 Corolla 5 sp- pops out of 5th gear

139k- miles, manual, 01 Toyota Corolla.

Just this week, the gear shifter began to pop out of 5th gear. It occured after I took my foot off the gas, and then reapplied it. 55-65 mph. The A/C was on for the first time this year; It has occured more frequently each day since it began, and did occur when the A/C was off on one day.

There is not much pressure needed to take it out of 5th gear as compared to all other gears.

Any ideas?
Thanks. Hugh

There are - to my knowledge - this possible causes

1 the shift linkage is not correctly set or no longer properly alligned. this is a easy task for a mechnican to adjust, since that is external to the gearbox
2 the 5th gear gear line is not properly alligend. Unfortunatly this is within the gearbox, but i dont know wether this specific gearbox need to be opend to fix that. at some boxes this can be externaly adjusted
3 the rings which snap the 5th gear are worn out. This is rare, but possible mith this milage. This is definity a taks to completely take the gearbox apart.

as a sumary i would not encurage DIY.

finaly this has nothing to do with your AC

5th gear out on 91 Toyota Corolla. Expensive to fix? Worst case scenario?

5th gear out is a pretty general description, Is it grinding when trying to shift into 5th or when you go to 5th it pops out, or you shift into 5th and nothing happens? It could be a simple syncro repair to replacing just the 5th gear to rebuilding the whole transmission, either way, you may want to consider just buying a JY trans, it would probably be cheaper.

I have a 93 Toyota Celica GT and 5th gear just started to pop out of gear sometime it will go back in gear sometimes it just grins and wont go in gear Where should I start looking to fix this problem?

Unfortunately you will be looking in the transmission. Either the shifter base button is worn but that usually affects all gears or the 5th gear shift fork is bad or the syncro has failed

Manual shifter pops into neutral while driving in 5th, what is the solution?

Worn out bearings in the transmission. Or possibly shifter cable end bushings bad, not allowing the full engagement of gear.

More than likely the shifter parts or worn out, rebuild it.

1996 RAV4 pops out of 5th gear but if I hold it in it fine. All other gears are fine as well. No brass or metal on gear oil

You need to pull the trans and rebuild it ( replace the shifter sleave/fork ). If it's a front wheel drive model you can pick up a cheap used one (same part as in the Corolla). Unless you do a lot of highway driving or the Toyota is otherwise in great shape, I would just drive it without 5th gear since it's so old.

WELL IT SOUND LIKE YOUR TRANS IS GOING DOWN YOU NEED TO LOOK AT TRANS FLUID TO SEE IF IT IS CLEAR LOOKING OR IS IT LOOK LIKE METAL MAY BE IN IT DRAIN A LITTLE IN A PAN THE LOOK AT IT IN SOME LIGHT AND SEE IF IT LOOKS LIKE GOLD FLAKES OR SHING METEL IF SO TRANS HAS INTERNAL ISUSES

Transmission?

It may be the shifter lever bushing at the base of the shifter. To check you must remove the stick shift cover. With the stick exposed, push down and turn on the plate that holds the shifter shaft. It is spring loaded and may take some effort. ( Remove stick while in neutral) Pull the stick out of the trans where the stick shift pivots should be a rubber bushing about the size of a half dollar. I think you can only get this part at a Toyota dealer. Hope this helps !

No 5th gear

Do you mean that the shifter moves normally, and no gear engages, or the shifter won't go into the 5th gear position?
If the shifter won't go there, its probably a mis-adjusted linkage.
If it will go there, but you don't "feel" it go into gear, it could be that the ball and socket linkage rod for 5th gear has popped loose(this is common on higher mileage VWs with worn shifter parts) I recommend an entire shift bushing set be installed and then the proper adjustments can be made... Hope this helps...;-)
