Distributer cap and button are weak it sounds like
put the screw driver in the spark plug boot. close to a ground
make sure its not aluminum.
turn the engine over when its somewhat dark
look for the intensity of the spark.
if the sparks bright then its strong IE if the sparks not strong means its the coil that needs to be replaced.or the wires
More then likely its the cap button or plug wires..
if there is any cracks in the wires they will leak power out.. making it use more gas to make it run.

When you try to restart is the engine still hot? I'd probably check if it is trying to flood or fuel leak. Use a gage and check proper fuel pressure, key on engine off. Then with everything off see if fuel pressure will hold for a bit, generally it should hold to with in 5psi of the original reading for about a minute. If it drops like a rock, you have a fuel pressure leak. If fuel pressure regulator on fuel rail, check the vac line, if it has gas in it, the regulator is faulty. It could be leaking from fuel injector?
I don't what testing was done on your vehicle? Any applicable trouble codes? If you push gas pedal down when trying to start, it may go into clear flood mode. If it makes it easier to start, that would be my thinking. Could be other issues?

After changing the battery in my 1997 Buick Riv, the radio is stuck in LOC mode. How to munlock??

You should have used a battery saver plugged into the cig lighter before changing it out. The Dealer will have to unlock it now. They have the code it takes to do it. Lots of times car company's did this to prevent stolen stereos from working again once power was cut off. Theifs could'nt get rid of them cause they did'nt work without the code to unlock it.

I have a 94 chevy cavalier. and it wont start. the coil is fine and so is the spark plugs. and it does turn over when i crank it... i would pump the gas a couple of times and it would seem to try and start...

you need to check see if it is getting fuel sounds like a clogged fuel filter and when you pump the fuel peddle you are puttting it clear flood mood which may also be leaking fuel injectors and flooding the cylinders with fuel but most likely is a clogged fuel filter try spraying starter fluid in throttle body and if starts its clogged fuel filter

I have a 99 gmc jimmy sls. when i go to start it it takes me two times to start it...now it is starting to putt when i go to take off like it is hesitating..what could be the cause of this

Your ignition coil is going bad. Or at least the wire to it is. Start the truck in a shady or dark area and watch for sparks around the ignition coil. If you see some, give it a tune up, plugs, wires and cap and rotor. If you don't see any sparks, give it a tune up and also change the coil. Good luck.

Trouble starting the car

You most likely have a problem with the check valve of the fuel pump, this allows the fuel to drain back to the tank, hence the long start times. The fuel pump is in te tank, I suggest you replace it.

Car has starting problems

The signs you mention 'putt putt' are normally casued by excessive fuel, something approaching a flooded engine. If you do this with the hood open, you will probably smell raw gasoline.
A cold engine needs an extra shot of fuel to fire off but once warm, it gags on it. I don't know your car so I can't tell you what controls the extra gas for cold starts; it seems to be doing it whether cold or not. I guess I would first check any electronic temperature sensor which could be located in the cooling system or intake or exhaust system. Your new computer is getting the same wrong information as the old one.
