Sounds like a bad I.A.C. (idle air control) motor, or I.A.C. switch located on the side of the throttle body (dr. side) if i remember correctly. I ran into this on a '97 sport i used to own, if you go to remove it the screws (phillips head) are usually in there pretty tight. Keep me posted on if it helps.

Did you already tried increasing the idling speed?

Check if the PVC valve is clogged (no rattling when shaked). If it is, soak it with solvent. There's also a chance that the idler valve is clogged. Remove it, clean it with solvent then use compressed dry air to dry it. You may want also to check your ignition timing since the symptoms you are mentioning are also true with retarted ignition timing.

I would suggest you have the fuel pressure monitored while driving, this takes special equipment. Also have a functional test run on the engines automatic idle speed control system, you could have a defective idle speed control valve.

My 2001 Explorer Sport stalls in gear coming to and stopping at street lights or signs. It stalls only in gear when the AC or heat defroster is on. It doesn't stall when in park.

it could be the IAC ( Idle Air Control) solenoid, but I cant tell you how to easily test it. So I ASSUME the a/c works OK when driving? I would replace the IAC first, its a real common problem.

1996 Ford Explorer XLT V6 - will start but stalls after 5 mins.

This can be cause by many things, such as a fuel pump going bad / or is bad, fuel injectors need cleaned / replaced, fuel filter dirty just to name a few. Could also have a vapor lock where the fuel line is running to close to a heat source like the manifold or engine and the heat creates a vacum in the fuel line stopping the flow of fuel. Best bet have a garage repair shop look at it. To many hit and miss causes.
