Nothing keeps fuel in the engine when its off the fuel pump draws fuel from the tank when you start it so it could be the fuel pump, also you said it was when the car was cold you may just have to get a higher grade oil if the climate is cold also buy a bottle off antifreeze (ethylene glycol) and add it to the radiator coolant

Dies when I first start have to restart a few times and dies at stop light unless it gets a little gas

This is usually a problem caused by a bad water temperature sensor. There are usually 2 sensors with one working the temperature gauge and the second working engine controls.

The "cold start" sequence is similar to a choke in old cars. It needs the signal from the water sensor to trigger the cold start sequence. The cold start sequence enriches the fuel charge, adjusts timing, and increases idle speed until the engine gets a little warm.

Now if stalling when warm, you have other issues. Manifold runners are a problem on some engines.

Ford Taurus idles low and takes 3-4 times to stay running on cold days

Some of these models have 2 temperature sensors. One makes the dash gauge or light work and the other works the engine controls.

The one that makes the engine controls work acts like a choke. It speeds up the rpm and enriches the fuel mix for cold starts. This is why you are having more problems in cold weather. You can see which one operates the dash gauge and then change the other one. Hopefully once you get the temperature sensor reporting to the engine management module, everything will work again.

2000 ford taurus hard starting

Have a shop run a fuel pressure leak down test and have the engine coolant temperature sensor checked for proper colds engine value, if it is reading wrong for any reason then it can starve for fuel cold and it makes it hard to start.

1996 ford taurus. Should the water pump pump water even when cold.

Yes it does pump water at all times... when the thermostat is closed it will only circulate water through the engine, when the thermostat opens it will circulate through the engine and radiator cooling the water that was warm from engine heat.

sounds like your thermostat is stuck open, if its takes a very long time for the engine to warm up and you get nothing but cold air from your heat then thats the first place i would start.

next time it wont start, pour hot water over ecu, if it starts replace ecu, you will need a scanner to reset as it will go into theft mode when you fit new ecu, beware that this is a common fault and you can buy 2nd hand faulty computers.

1996 Ford Tuarus

You really have to think a bit about when those sometimes are. Is it only when the engine is already warmed up? Is it only when the engine is cold? If you have a tach on the dash, what is the real high idle speed of the engine? How many rpms? Does the transmission shift hard or smoothly?
