Question about 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

95 cutlass supreme's random misfire has mechanic stumped.

My 95 cutlass is having an issue with misfiring at random times. It will run fine for 8 or 9 days and then I will start it up and the engine will misfire. the occurrences usually happen after I have run the car for 20 or so miles and then let it sit for a hour or two to run errands. When i try to start it up again it misfires, and idles wildly, 500rpm-1000rpm, the dash lights will dim and flicker. If I can get it moving and in to second gear, the engines smooths out and runs reasonably well. I'll go home and park it and the next day it will start just fine and continue to do so for the next week or so and then the process repeats. I have failed my emissions, and taken it to my mechanic three times now and I am still having the issue. So far I have a manifold gasket replaced, a tune up, a fuel system cleaning, and a O2 sensor replaced.

other issues that may be relevant.
the gasket for my manifold ruptured spewing oil and coolant all over the engine compartment a little after this idle issue started. The lack of coolant seized my water pump. I have had both professionally replaced.
my abs light comes on at random times mostly in the early morning when i turn out onto the main street and stays on until I shut the car off. It also does this when the misfiring occurs.

Does any one have the slightest idea where I should start?

Thank you for your help.

SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE A BAD CONNECTION AT THE BATTERY. IF THE TERMINALS ARE LOOSE OR CORRODED THEY CAN DISPLAY SOME OF THESE SYMPTOMS. IF THEY ARE TIGHT AND CORROSION FREE, THEN HAVE THE BATTERY CHECKED FOR VOLTAGE AND COLD CRANK AMPERAGE AT YOUR LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE. MOST AUTO PARTS PLACES CHECK THIS FOR FREE. BUT DON'T RULE OUT A BAD BATTERY CABLE. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. GOOD LUCK

Why is my 2000 Toyota Echo misfiring on left turns ?

Sounds like you have a wire in the steering column that is shorting when you turn left but goes back to close to normal when you turn back to straight. Check the wiring harness coming out of the steering column.

I have a 1996 Plymouth voyager with a 3.0 liter. engine an it is a v6. My question is it is throwing a p0300 code , of which I am aware it is a random misfire. but they y does it act like my fuel pump is...

Random Misfires on start up
You can disregard the PO300
& work on the misfire issue in general

Ignition misfires
Vacuum leaks
Egr system
Evap leaks
Exhaust leaks
Spark plugs
Mechanical timing
Mechanical engine wear or damage

The entire engine has to be tested

There is a general long list that can be
shuffled some, but it would take several hours
of testing with professional tools to just find the problems

I only mentioned a few areas

That is what the few ASE Master Technicans with Level 1
driveability skills do

If your dealing with fuel pressure issues, the new pump
runs or it doesn't
If it doesn't, given the vehicles age, I would say wiring
issues on the ground side, anywhere in the fuel pump
circuit

I have a 1996 oldsmobile cutlass supreme sl 3.4l and sometimes my car will shake a little and the check engine light will come on and sometimes i will be driveing and when i hit the gas and take off fast...

the flashing check engine light is indicating a misfire. if you can't get it scanned for codes, start with the obvious, check plugs, wires, and coil packs first.

1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass P0405 EGR Error Code

P0300 Diagnostic Code - Random Misfire
Technical description:--
Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected:---
Exactly what does this code means:--
Basically this means that the the car's computer has detected that not all of the engine's cylinders are firing properly.
A P0300 diagnostic code indicates a random or multiple misfire. If the last digit is a number other than zero, it corresponds to the cylinder number that is misfiring. A P0302 code, for example, would tell you cylinder number two is misfiring. Unfortunately, a P0300 doesn't tell you specifically which cylinder(s) is/are mis-firing, nor why.
Symptoms:--
the engine may be harder to start.the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate.
other symptoms may also be present…There may be rough idle, sputters and stalls and jerks.
Causes:--
A code P0300 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty spark plugs or wires, Faulty coil (pack), Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector(s),Burned exhaust valve, Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages, Faulty camshaft position sensor, Defective computer.
Possible solutions for this error problem:--
If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the vehicle, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.
Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or un-metered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.
