Question about 2003 Kia Optima

1 Answer

We have a 2001 Kia Optima. The check engine light came on, the car started losing power while driving and then quit running. The timing belt was going bad. We had it replaced. That did not solve the problem. We had the fuel pump replaced and the cam shaft sensor. Still had the same problem. We can drive it for about 25 miles and the problem starts again. We let it sit for 10 minutes and we can drive another 20 miles before it happens again. When it loses power, it feels like it's down shifting. Anybody got a clue how to fix this? We've already thought of driving it over a cliff and end our misery. Please help us!!!!! When I was driving it would lose power and feel as if it was going to die it would shift through gears and everything but when we revved it up it would like stick or whatever took it to the shop and had it checked they said the cadilydic converter and know my altenator is going out!!!!my door also will not unlock once it is locked but we stick a screw driver down where the window is and play with it where the mecanism is n the inside and it opens

Try to replace the ignition coil. Defective ignition coil will stop to function when it gets hot. When it cools down, it will function again.

My 2004 Kia optima shut off will driving. It cranks but doesn't want to start up. Can any body help me?

Well , it's probably missing one of three thing's , spark , fuel or compression ! Now you need to find out which one , pull a spark plug wire an hold a screw driver in the end of the plug wire an hold it close to ground an have someone crank the engine over ! don't hold the screw driver by the metal , you don't won't to get zapped . If there is spark spray some carburetor cleaner into the engine at some point ,vacuum hose ,air intake , the throttle plate would be best , there is usually a black tube going from the air filter box to the engine ! A couple of clamps holds it on , take it off an the engine side you should be able to see the throttle plate ! If it tries to start after spraying carb. cleaner in , you have a fuel delivery problem ! Fuel pump relay , fuel pump driver module or the fuel pump it self is bad ! Now if you have spark an sprayed carb. cleaner an it did not try to start you need to check engine compression ! The timing belt may have worn enough for it to jump time a little causing it to be out of time ! Back in the 80's the little cogs on the belt would wear off an the cam shaft wouldn't turn . Back then it was easy to check by taking the distributor cap off a see if it would turn while cranking the engine !

I own 2001 Kia Optima LX, it has 121k miles on it. The check engine light is on, and recently it jerks when moving. It does not pickup speed. It moves at 20-40 miles/hour, then after a while it picks up...

The locking steering wheel is a mystery to me , but the poor performance and check engine light make me think fuel filter / fuel pump.
I had a very bad experience with an 02 kia , only had 50,000 miles on it when the timing belt went and destroyed the engine , so........ i always mention to people with kia's to have the belt adjusted and inspected or replaced if you don't know how old the belt is.

2001 Kia Optima - Stalls, hesitates,or works just fine!

I'd look for a vacum leak if the check engine light is not on. A good trick for this is while the engine is running take a propane torch, turn it on but dont light it. move it around in the engine compartment and when you get close to the vacume leak the engine will rev higher.

You need to find out the error codes being generated when the light came on. These codes will stay in memory until being reset by a code reader. The reader plugs into the OBD II port under the dash, near the steering wheel. (OBD stands for On Board Diagnostics). You can buy or rent these readers for not to much money now a days. Costco has a basic one for about $40. http://www.kiatechinfo.com/index.asp This is Kia's tech website. You, or anybody else, can register there and get loads of information about your car, including what the error codes mean, for free. Good luck!

Car dies when driving, check engine light comes on.

There is a good chance it could be your fuel pump , however if the check engine light is coming on and the dealer cant tell you what is wrong , try a different dealer or another shop. Second opinions never hurt.
