Question about 2001 Dodge Durango

Duramngo cooling system problems (2001, 4.7 L)

I have a 2001 Dodge Durango with 4.7 litre engine, 2-wheel drive. Have had to replace the radiator three times since 2005. Now it is leaking again. The dealer has covered this under the radiator warranty but now the dealer is gone (due to the economy). No more warranty. What is causing these radiators to keep developing the leaks due to cracking of the radiator cooloing tubes? This will be the 4th radiator since 2005. Also, two freeze plugs had to be replaced due to corrosion. The rear compartment hearter core developed a leak and had to be replaced. The small electric aux. pump in the cooling system started leaking and had to be replaced. What's wrong with Chrysler's cooling systems? I have had older cars that did not need freeze plugs replaced for 20 years or more. Why on a 2001 car are these corroding away in less than four years?

    Thank you for the information.

Strange that the Dodge dealer did not do this after so many repairs to this cooling system. They have, or that is, had the records of all these repairs.

How are these ground wires and cables checked? Does the factory repair manual list the locations of these ground cables?

Mcdevito75 here, Part of the reson could be manufactures are useing alumimum a lighter metal in many parts of their cars, and alumium does not hold up to heat very well. In my opinion your cooling system is just too hot, Part of some auto radiators are made from plastic, also not good for the heat build up in your cooling system. First I would get a very good brand of anti freeze a brand that says on the container it protects aluminum, and mix a specs. Then I would replace the vehicles thermostat from the 195 dergree the factory recommends down to a 180 degree, this will not hurt the vehicle or computer, lastly I would change the radiator cap the one inuse now could be building too much pressure in your cooling system. About your warrantee any Durango Dealership should honor it, unless it"s worn out. (over)

How to permanently disable 4 wheel drive in 2001 Durango. Can I drive the car with the front shaft removed?

yes
if the car is all wheel drive you will have to engage center diff lock
if ordinary 4 wheel drive there will be no problem because if you have it in 2 wheel drive high it is the same thing as having no front drive shaft installed

Looking for the fill plug on a 200 dodge darango 4 wheel drive front punkin all i see is a vent pipe

COOLANT-ADDING ADDITIONAL
Do not remove radiator cap to add coolant to system. When adding coolant to maintain correct level, do so at coolant reserve/overflow tank. Use a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze containing Alugard 340-2 y and low mineral content water.
Remove radiator cap only for testing or when refilling system after service. Removing cap unnecessarily can cause loss of coolant and allow air to enter system, which produces corrosion.

COOLANT LEVEL CHECK
The cooling system is closed and designed to maintain coolant level to top of radiator.
WARNING: DO NOT OPEN RADIATOR DRAINCOCK WITH ENGINE RUNNING OR WHILE ENGINE IS HOT AND COOLING SYSTEM IS UNDER PRESSURE.
Remove radiator cap. The coolant level should be to top of radiator. If not, and if coolant level in coolant recovery bottle is at ADD mark, check for:
  • An air leak in coolant reserve/overflow tank or its hose
  • An air leak in radiator filler neck
  • Leak in pressure cap seal to radiator filler neck

I have a 2001 dodge durango 4.7 v8 and I just replaced the radiator , exirliry water pump and regular water pump as well as 5 thermostats my truck is still over heating blowing ice cold air for heat and...

Have you checked the temperature sending unit? It reads the temp of your engine and sends the information to the engine to open or close thermostat. If it is not functioning properly it may not be having the thermostat open. Leading to overheating. I hope I could be of some help to you.

To install and take it apart/timing replacements? for a dodge durango 2001 4.7 2 wheel drive

What leads you to think your timing chain needs to be replaced? In the 4.7 motor, the timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine, or at least 150K.

2001 dodge durango have replaced cooling system neck-vehicle is building too much pressure blowing coolant out of filler cap-could it be thermostat causing problem?

Have you "burped" the system to get all of the trapped air out?? If you have the 4.7 motor, it helps to slightly elevate the front of the Durango.

Then, leave radiator cap off and start engine. Watch coolant level and open the system vent which is right off of the upper hose connection.

When air ceases to come out of the vent, secure it and top off coolant.

It helps to run the engine rpms up to 2-2.5 k in short bursts to help get the air out.

Make sure to have both front and rear heater systems on full heat during this process.

You need to check the cv joints in the front end or the u joints in the front drive shaft. If none of the above then the problem is internal in the front diff.

Have a 2001 Dodge Durango. Temp is hot, coolant is cold. Replaced thermostat still running hot 2001 durango stuck in 4 wheel drive. 2 wheel drive blinks

If you havent already, leave the radiator cap off of your radiator while you start the vehicle. Be sure the engine is cold, you could get hurt if not because the coolant will build up pressure. If the cap is off, no pressure will build. Wait a while for the vehicle to heat up, look in the opening, and see if the coolant is flowing. If so, could be a bad fan, or gummed up radiator......if NOT your turbine on your water pump could be bad, OR, by chance, the thermostat is not working.

Many times this type of issue is caused by the motor that changes the transfer from 2 to 4 wheel drive, they get stuck, another issue is dirty fluid, have you had the transfwer case serviced?
