Question about 1998 Subaru Legacy

Subaru legacy 4eat issue...

I have a 1992 subaru legacy sport with a 4eat, and the transmission has been actin up. It will shift from first to second fine, but revs almost to 5,000 rpm before shifting into third, and refuses to shift into fourth at all. I had the transmission rebuilt a year ago, but the shop that I took it to is claiming that it needs to be rebuilt again?? I don't trust the guy and I was wondering if anyone might know of a different solution, such as shift solenoids or other electrical things?

Thanks for responding, I actually checked for error codes and it turns out my tranny is just shot. All of the friction plates are burned up from third and fourth gear. I would suggest that anyone with an older 4eat installs a transmission cooler!

Check that the Duty Solenoid B is good. Diagnostic may indicate a code 12. Easy to replace. Solenoid is on valve body next to filter. Must drop pan and should be right there. Call Subaru dealer with your VIN number and they can verify. Price is about $150 to purchase over dealer parts counter.

I know that the 4-EAT transmission number 1 killer is heat. In the subaru forums they have posted a good number of suggestions on transmission cooler applications. Wish your situation could haved been simpler and cheaper. Good Luck...take care.

1992 Subaru legacy wagon will not shift up from first gear. it is an AT.

run the fault but all you describe is operated from the VSS sensor ( vehicle speed sensor)
it tells the cruise control the vehicle speed , tells the TCM the vehicle speed so that ratios can be changed, activates the speedo, and will report with a check engine light to report a transmission problem
run the fault codes first

When should a 1992 Subaru Legacy transmission be replaced? how many miles?

There is not a " mileage" to replace a transmission. As long as it is maintained with fluid changes it is quite easy for it to last as long as the car. If it has not been maintained regularly it may need rebuilt.

My 1994 Subaru Legacy Touring (Turbo) Wagon is not shifting properly when taking off. It does not shift until 3500 rpm at 20 mph. The initial shift should be around 2000 rpm. All other gears seem...

The 1st>>2nd shift on the Subaru 4EAT automatic transmission can be more abrupt, but 3500 is too high.
Is there any delay when shifting from Park to Drive?
Does the Power light flash on startup? If it does, you can pull the codes by following these instructions.

This trans has 'bands' that can be adjusted. I'm not 100% sure they affect the 1st>2nd gear shift, but maybe they need adjusted.

Take a look @ and 2 sites dedicated to Subarus.

Good luck,

My car is a manual transmission, it wont go into reverse or 5th,

Your shift linkage may just be falling apart or your clutch pressure plate and throwout bearing may be gone. Good luck.

Check the transmission fluid level. If it is low, fill it. Otherwise, if you happen to have a Subaru Select Monitor or equivalent, then you can read the fault codes for the 4EAT transmission and it will tell you which internal solenoid valves are sticky. At that point you can either add a quart of stuff that says it solves transmission problems and hope for the best, disassemble the transmission and change the problem valves, swap the transmission for one that works, or take it to someone to have it repaired.
