The transmission needs major service -- it should be transported to a garage for repair.

I have a 98 Chevy cavalier , it has Manuel transmission, it will only go in 3rd and 4th gear, what could be the problem

It could obviously be the tranny is gone, but you would want to make sure you have enough clutch flood and the clutch is fully engaging. I had a leak in my 98 cavalier clutch fluid, and when it got low, it would not fully engage the clutch, simply making it hard to get into gear. Its DOT3 fluid. If so try reversing a little bit and gently tiring to get into gear. I believe 1st and 2nd gear share the same gear selection fork inside the tranny. Drain fluid and look for metal.

My 2003 cavalier automatic transmission slips in last high gear

The slip is likely always there you just feel it the most in top gear because that is when the most stress is on the clutch pack inside the transmission. You will need to have the transmission overhauled in most cases to correct this.

I hope its your release bearing, but I had this same issue with my Audi and it turned out to be I need a new transmission, the gears are not catching it sounds like. your synchros may also be off. Does it do this in every gear, and once it does move, does the clutch slip?

98 Cavalier autotrans slips in 3rd gear

Patrick, make sure you check our transmission fluid. If it hasn't been changed in awhile, do so. Change the filter as well. Look around the engine and under the car and make sure your not leaking any fluid. Fluid leaking or not, the transmission may be bad. If it is a standard, it may have something to do with your shifting components.

sounds like the transmission is slipping-check to make sure your tranny fluid is at the correct level and if it is check with your dealer as they may be able to do a tranny service & adjust the bands.
Good Luck.

While driving the car quite and the netural sign starts blinking. Change fuel pump and now it want start.

It sounds like the linkage in the transmission has slipped. Check the linkage adjustment from the gear shift to the transmission. It sounds like it has slipped into neutral, and automative transmissions will not start in neutral.
Try moving the gear shift back and forth and have a friend see if the linkage, viewable from under the hood (though you may have to remove the air box first), is moving as well. If it is, disconnect the cable off the link and manually push the arm into park. Try to start the car. If your car starts, then this is definitely the problem. Go to your local transmission dealership for information on repair.

My 2001 Cavalier transmission is having problems. The car will barely move when I take off and has problems shifting gears (its an automatic). Someone who rode in it said it could be the filter has come...

I have never hear of the filter comming loose unless you had the trans serviced and the filter was not snapped into place properly, the thing is here you have a slipping transmission, once that happens it burns up the clutch pack very quickly, have a trans shop drive the car and give you a diagnosis, they will in most cases do this for free.
