Question about Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Maxima. Oil just changed. It burns about 1qt every 1500 miles. It just started developing a loud knock from timing chain side of engine on start up for 3 secs. Oil light flickers for a few secs periodically. I called the dealer for a price on a oil pump he said "we never sell them get it checked"...

When do you service the timing chain on a 2002 maxima 3.5

you dont. its a maintance free item, unless there is a failure, but nissan really doesnt have many if any issues with timing chains in your model year. its the later models that have issues with some timing chains. in your model i would be watching your oil level. we have seen some of those models burn oil.

When does the timing chain for 2002 Nissan Maxima st v6 need to be changed?

You change rubber timing belts, because they wear and could break

You do not change a chain, unless the guides wear or the tensioners hang up,so keep changing your oil every 4000 miles or less and use 0W-30 or 5W-30,synthetic if you can afford it (Mobil 1 leaves the engine real clean inside,( I have pulled a couple oil pans)

My 05 silverado 1500 with 70000 miles seems to be burning oil is this normal

How much oil? 1qt every 1000 miles is in acceptable limits for most manufacturers. That is too much in my book, so you may be starting to have a motor issue.

My 03 Maxima (3.5l 255 hp) started burning oil at rate of 1 qt per 1000 mi. One guy at the dealer says this is normal, just keep adding oil, other guy at dealer says 'time to get a new car." Either way, it...

1qt per 1000 miles isn't too bad, all things considered. There is probably some leakage through the piston seals, which is to be expected after 115,000 miles. I would give a good quality leak-fix in a can a try, as they can really help with some of the more minor leaks. If it is a piston ring or seal problem, its an expensive fix, but give a canned solution a go to see if it helps.

Another option that a mechanic friend of mine suggested for my old Grand Am was going from synthetic to conventional motor oil. Synthetics don't generate sludge or buildup, which is great, most of the time, but when mine started to leak oil and smoke on startup he suggested going back to conventional, as some of the buildup would actually help stop the minor leaks.

Nissan maxima, high oil consumption on 2002

If you love the car as you say than be prepaired to shell out the bucks for a rebuild or replacement engine, because thats the only fix for your situation. You may not see any blue smoke but believe me its burning it, or you got a leak witch you say you don't. Its going someware and most likely its out the exhaust.

Engine was knocking loudly and then stopped

When the timing chain goes if the valves are fully open they won't clear the pistons (likely the loud thump you heard) when they come to TDC. Likely looking at a full blown valve job now, make sure it didn't crack or warp the heads in the process. With 192,000 miles on it it was probably due for one anyway. Easiest way is to pull the heads off the block and send them in for a machining and valve train replacement (about 4-$600.00 if you DIY.

2003 Nissan Maxima Timing Chain

You can wait its just fine, However if you ever start to notice oil leaking from front cover, then you will need to change. If there is no loss in power feel sluggish especially on take off, Its almost impossible for these type of chains to break. So enjoy until the wheel fall off..lol. good luck

2002 nissan maxima gle timing chain or sprockets

Ok, first off you need to take your vehicle to a Nissan dealer for a second opinion. Its not at all common to need a T-chain @ 58,000 miles unless you dont take care of your car and or you beating the snot out of it like it was stolen. What is the symptom? What caused it? When did it start? Second, this is not something an amature could/should do as it is very involved and there are alot of things you could potentially mess up. Third a new engine(long block), parts alone would run approx. 6-8 thousand dollars. A used engine could be an option and could run approx.1500-2500 dollars depending on mileage. Hope this helps and good luck.

Missing oil

very common problem you are burning oil. the piston rings, that nissan used are the problem. We see quite a few of the 3.5 liter engines loosing oil due to piston ring problem. nissan sais that 1qt. per 3500 miles is exceptable, but who want a vehicle that burns oil?? not me. good luck with that.
