Question about 1996 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

1996 jeep cherokee stopped while driving it. I thought maybe it was the catalytic converter since it started rattling after I put a new muffler on it.

He advice I have gotten didn't work. 1996 jeep cherokee stopped while driving it. I thought maybe it was the catalytic converter since it started rattling after I put a new muffler on it. I disconnected it as you mention to see if it would start. I also just put in a new u joint. I also check the fuel pump and it seems to be working but I could be wrong. Do you have any other advice.

And......a fuel pump can't seem to work you need to do a pressure test to verify it either is working or not.

SOURCE: Replace muffler, not the catalytic converter which started to rattle. Stop running, will crank but will not start. can it be the catalytic converter.

if the converter is rattlin then it needs to be replaced because the element inside is broken. if the jeep still does not run try removing the catalytic converter to see if the restriction is too much. should start if the converter is restricted. if it doesnt maybe its whatever caused the converter to go bad in the first place

While idle it rattles from under carriage

Check the catalytic converter located in the center of the vehicles exhaust system. Often times the inner section breaks lose and can rattle something awful. Have owed 2 seperate jeeps in which that occured. Under most case vehicle is still operable just noisey especially in drive at a stop.

Rattling of catalytic converter heat shield

If it is the heat shield , any muffler shop can put a couple of welds on it. Could also be that the cat converter is destroyed inside with pieces of it ratling around. In that cast a new cat is the only answer.

My subaru forester has a rattle in the catalytic converter can it be repaired

I bet its just a the heat shield on the catalytic converter. Subaru uses very thin metal and the heat shield is bolted as opposed to welded together. This rattle is extremely common on subys.

mrmopar is right that you should replace it.

however there is a quick fix that will stop the noise. Go pick up a 6" stainless steel hose clamp at the hardware store. put the hose clamp around the cat. It should be obvious whats loose when you look under the car.

if you are a little handy its not a hard job to do your self. Just 4 bolts. You can get a catalytic converter for $200 online. Get the gaskets too. shouldn't take more than an hour or two.

You will need to put the car on jack stands or rhino ramps to get access. Once you are under the car, the parts are easy to get to.

Always, always chock the tires when your under the car. You do not want a car to fall on you.

Did you know Jeep did a recall and paid for replacement of catalytic converters on 1996 models (don't know about any others) - they reimbursed me for work done, up to a point - hope this helps!
