Question about 1996 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

Air cond dash light works, compressor doesn't go on.

1996 camry with 4 cyl engine. Air cond dash button light goes on, does not blink indicating problem, but compressor does not engage, engine speed does not change, and engine cooling fan does not go on as it would with air running. Checked all air cond fuses... all ok. What could it be? Worked fine last year. Thanks!

Thanks. I'm wondering though... Is there any way I can add r134a ac coolant to system if air doesn't run? The kits I bought at WalMart say add to low-pressure side when air is running, but air doesn't actually run.

Can I still do this myself with simple can of r134a or do I have to take it to the shop?

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Thanks, that sounds a little advanced for me. I was thinking of checking the relays since I have a meter to do that. Then if it all checks out electrically, I guess it's time to go to the shop.

It didBTW, run twice already and was cold maybe 2 months ago. So I was hoping it was a fuse or a relay. What do you think? Possible?

AC's have a low freon switch that shuts off the system to protect the compressor in the advent that you have a freon leak have the system checked for a leak

if you install the can of 134-a the compressor should start again but, you won't know how bad or, where your system is leaking

and, the freon may not go in because it may need to be evacuated

what we do is: start the car's engine, then: run a jumper wire from the battery to the compressor clutch pulley switch to temporarily bypass the low freon shutoff switch this makes the compressor run

Freon can only safely be put into a system on the low side

Introducing freon into the high side could cause an explosion

Unless you know what you are doing though; I wouldn't advise it

The problem is the blower motor speed control resistor, it is located near the blower motor in the housing. I exchanged mine and it works like a charm now.

Ac fuse blowing, in 1996 isuzu rodeo

Disconnect wire to Air Conditioning Compressor and connect normal test light to wire, from engine harness(body)side. Fit new fuse and try air cond controls and switch, test light should light up and hopefully fuse wont blow indicating short in compressor clutch windings(replace compressor). If fuse blows while doing this test compressor might be ok and fault short some where else, fan speed resistor block, fan or control/switches, wiring.

get someone to see if compressor clutch tries to engage when you push the switch in before it starts flashing.the only problems that i have seen cause this are a bad speed sensor in the compressor, loose belt, compressor trying to lock up, wire broken going to compressor, magnetic clutch relay. i hope this will help you and if not give me more info on how, when this started and 4 or 6 cyl............good luck and let me know...........

Hot air blowing with climate control off.

you may have an air mix motor problem or a mode control motor problem. there is a test you can do that may help: 1. turn the ignition switch on. 2. turn the fan switch off. 3. press the recirc control button to select recirc (recirc indicator light comes on.) 4. press and hold the recirc button to select fresh (recirc indicator goes off). Continue to hold the the button down until the recirc indicator comes on for two seconds and then goes off. If the system is okay, the recirc indicator will stay off. If there is a problem, the recirc indicator blinks a code to indicate a fault. 1 blink=air mix control motor/circuit fault. 2 blinks= mode control motor/circuit fault. 3 blinks= evaporator temp sensor circuit fault. In case of multiple problems, the recirc indicator will only blink the code with the least number. write back if this test shows a code and we'll go from there.
