Thumping sound in rear wheels on turns or when braking downhill

The rear wheels make a thumping or dull sound of balls rolling around on turns or braking going downhill. Just had new brakes and rotors done. Chrysler 300m, 2003

Thanks, but the sound is coming from inside the wheels. My tires are pretty new. Maybe thumping isn't the right word. Wobble? Rapid clunking?

  • barbarar237 May 29, 2009

I don't know if that's it or not, but thank you.

Why am i hearing a thump sound when i take off or turn my wheels left? I got new. Rack and pinion&mount bushings, lower&upper control arms sway bar link bushings, ball joints,cv axles. I have a 95 acura

The only thing that comes to mind is the wheel bearings. I noticed them missing from your list, and they will cause thumping and banging, especially when turning a corner or a highway on or off ramp. You also mentioned "while taking off and turning", but not when braking, another sign. The brake pads hold the wheel while braking, hiding the shake. The easiest ( and free ) way to test this is, jack up one wheel at a time, make sure the tire has completely left the ground. Grab the wheel with both hands and shake it around. Normally there will be some play, but not much. If it noticeably shakes and / or makes a thumping sound, you might have a problem. I also give one side a kick as well, just to be sure. If all is well, repeat with the next tire. Unfortunately you have to do this to each wheel separately to be sure, but at least you'll know, and not have to pay a mechanic to find out. Hope that helps you, Grim

Replaced all struts and upper control arms and 2001 accord is still making thumping noise whenn going over bumps

Sounds like your ball joints may be worn. You can check them yourself or have someone check them for you. If you elect to check yourself you may want to search youtube for a video. Basically you are supporting the vehicle and letting the suspension hang and lifting up on the wheels with a long bar while watching or play in the ball joint.

2001 caddilac deville dhs shakes when it goes over 60mph and makes thumping noise from rear passanger side when i brake

Check the U-joints this will give you a thumping sound by running
out of round. Banging on bottom of car.
The noise in the rear could be a bad wheel bearing, I had that
happen when the race of the bearing came apart.

I replaced the pads on my 2005 Honda Accord. I had

ABS only senses if the wheel is spinning or not.
"Thumping sound" sounds like a bad problem. I've not had thumping sound from my front brakes ever.
I don't know how a caliper could cause thumping.
Is everything installed correctly and do the brakes stop the car??

well,if it doesnt change with the wheel turned a little it might be a rear wheel bearing or even a couple of loose lugs on a wheel,or even a brake pad worn down to the rivets, can u give a better description of the noise? (metallic, dull thumping,etc...)

Thumping at front passenger wheel area

if the noise isassociated with "wheel speed" then it is in the rolling parts... axle hub bearing brake rotor caliper wheel or tires...if it goes away on right turns then you are unloading or separating the issue then...so a hub /wheel bearing /axle issue is most likely...does your brake pedal pulse when you feel it..(riding the brake while driving)..does the steering wheel shimmy ?
