Question about 2003 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
I have a 2003 Jetta 2.0 . There has been sort of a "phantom blinker" sound coming from the dash when the blinker is not even in use. It is not a constant problem but when it decides to go on for 10 mins straight, it gets very annoying. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Thank You!
This is a known problem with these cars. The problem is in the combination switch (turn signals/wipers etc behind the steering wheel). When dirt and muck accumulates back there, it shorts the contacts and activates the flasher (even though no lights come on), and I agree with you: It's very annoying!
I recommend going to www.tdiclub.com and search the forums for something like "flaky turn signal switch" - there is a whole thread on how a fairly handy person can fix the problem without paying the dealer an arm. Or a leg. (I emphasize caution when working with an active airbag though. Read carefully!) I'm going to be doing the same thing on my 2002 later this week.
