My Neon keeps stalling at 4k rpm. will not run

When i first start my car, unless i keep giving it gas, it stalls. when i drive at low speeds it stalls. 97 dodge neon I think my sons car is a 2002. When starting it is ok, but when RPM reach about 4000 or whatever the car starts to sputter, trys to stall and will not run right. No one can tell him what to do as it throws no error codes. All tuned. Dogde tells him it might be electrical and needs a new wiring harness, but can not say that is the problem, again no errors codes. Can you help or advise. Kyle

Done all that, fuel filter, plugs, censor. No codes

  • twisecarver May 28, 2009

    done that

  • twisecarver May 28, 2009

fuel filter inside pump. 1998 dual overhead cam. Man trany, only does it on the payload, only does this when in gear. Jerking, cluch pressed in and car shuts down and dies. When in neutal it is fine. Tach drops to 0. looses all power in speedometer.

No speed guage is bad. RPM drops when going about 4krpm or car is warm. When I press in on the clutch to drop the jerking I loose power.

  • twisecarver May 28, 2009

    done that

  • twisecarver May 28, 2009

I am doing this for my son. your answer is no floor hot

  • twisecarver May 28, 2009

when reaching about 40mph starts jerking, running bad, he trys to feather troddle to keep it running and it stays running. If presses in cluch is dies down.

  • twisecarver May 28, 2009

no smoke, I would appreciate any help. No money to buy another car, and 2k for wire harness.

  • twisecarver May 29, 2009

He told me this morning that if you have the car in neutral and press the gas peddle like they would in smogging, that the car does not do this. In other words in neutral reving (spelling) up to high RPM the car has no problem, it is only when reaching 4k and above RPM.

  • Eric Shephard May 11, 2010

I'm at a lose here, because it has all the symtoms of a plugged cat. Let me check with my mechanic here he may have an answer.

Ok, does it blow black smoke when it's doing this? If so replace cold start sensor. Or maybe the coil is getting too hot.

  • Eric Shephard May 29, 2009

If it is the wire harness go to your local recycle yard and get a used one for about $200.

Check fuel filter and pump pressure?

Posted on May 28, 2009

  • Richard Scordino May 29, 2009

Check plugs for fouling, check ignition system (high tension side) for cross firing...Happens under a load as cylinder pressures rise...not freewheeling in neutral. Arcing at coil, inside cap or at rotor or ignition wire "leaks" and fouled or incorrect plugs can do this both at low rpm and high rpm. Mechanically this can also happen if you have a weak valve spring, especially at 4,000rpm and above. You may have done some of this already but did you "read" plugs? I know you have fuel because it runs, but have you verified real fuel pressure? There is a huge difference between 15psi and 40 and you can't tell by just looking at it squirt.
Last, if the dealer says it's a harness problem, perhaps they have run into this before and that was the cause...they don't always lie...
My best advise is to get a manual and individually test everything with a good volt/ohm meter and fuel pressure gauges...you can think your way into oblivion but won't have any answers 'till you establish some good information. Though I have a lot of experience, the one thing it has taught me is to do careful tests before assuming anything is good or bad.

Do you have the idle speed turned up to keep it from dying? Because it is high. Check engine light on? Have you checked for vacuum leaks at the gasket under the throttle body? How does the car run under acceleration? You might have a worn distributor shaft.

Have the idle bypass valve checked, also called idle air control valve.
If that valve is stuck in the closed position, it's not allowing the fuel to bypass the throttle plate to keep it idling, resulting in stalling, but will keep engine running if the pedal is pushed down.

Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

My Neon keeps stalling

Try the simple stuff first and ask yourself these questions:

How old are the spark plugs? (I think this is 90% gaurenteed the problem)

Is the car getting enough air through the filter?
Is the filter dirty? (replace if so)
If not you might need your idle advanced a little.

Car idles low, stalls after start

Common issue at the shop (i'm a ford technician), here is what I do to correct it.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
