yes it is slippery feeling accrding to the tech and it is definately sweet smelling..what hoses were disconnected to replace the manifold seal that could have damged the heater core?

  • merciergal72 May 28, 2009

i am just frustrated becasue of this whole problem. the other comment that was posted said that it may be related to a broken core that could have happened during the repair? now i am really confused

  • merciergal72 May 29, 2009

thank you, very helpful now comes the fix..i am quoted $1200 dollars from the dealership for repair almost 1000 in labor alone. i realize this is an extensive repair taking out the dash and all but i also called a local radiator shop that can do the whole job for under 500. they use an aftermarket part that they claim is made by the same company that makes the ac delco. is this true, and is there anything i should be aware of if i take it to the radiator shop versus the dealership?

thank you...i also need some advice regarding fixing the issue

Probably not. Residue on the passengers side rug is likely either from a leaky heater core or a blocked air conditioner evaporator drain. Is the residue slippery feeling? Does it have a sweet anti-freeze smell? If you blot it up with a white towel, does it have a color?

If it is colored the same color as your anti-freeze (green, orange or pink, depending on what type your tahoe uses) and has a sweet smell, my bet is the heater core is leaking. This would also cause fogging on the windshield when using the front defroster and a sweet smell from the air vents when the heat is turned on.

If it just seems like water and seems to get worse when you use your air conditioning, it is likely a blocked AC evaporator drain.

In any case, neither of these problems are likely to be related to an intake manifold job.

The hoses to the heater core are not related to the intake manifold. Matter of fact, the heater core is not even inside the engine compartment, this is why you have antifreeze on your interior carpet. I honestly cannot see how one could have affected the other. Heater cores can fail without cause, especially if the cooling system has not been maintained and the antifreeze has not been regularly changed. Sorry to say, but you're dealing with two different systems here..the intake and the cooling systems.

I suppose if someone intentionally pulled hard enough on the hoses, they could have inflicted damage on the heater core, but it is a long shot. If it was due to something intentional or due to mechanical damage, you would likely have a lake in your floorboard and a complete loss of most, if not all, of the antifreeze in your cooling system. What you are describing sounds like a normal failure of a heater core.

The dealer is almost always going to be more expensive than another automotive shop. Since the shop specializes in radiators, and the heater core is related to the cooling (radiator) system, I would feel confident in them being able to do this repair properly. Since I don't know who the shop uses for aftermarket parts, I have no way of knowing the quality of their parts. You may want to ask the repair shop what type of warranty they provide on the repair. Most reputable shops only use quality parts, as they don't want their reputation tarnished by defective parts. I would check with the Better Business Bureau or other online sites about the business itself. If they have a good reputation, they should be able to perform the repair just as well as a dealer.

Yes there is. It is under the dash on the passenger side of the car. Just under the glove box. There is two screws holding it in place. You will see a strait line on the heater box and it is behind it.

Water leaking on passenger side rug,how can i fix the problem, is it the AC tubing clogged up?

Yes, you have a drain line on the AC unit in front of the passenger seat, it comes through the fire wall and it gets clogged easily, find it, clear it and no more wet floor. It will flood the floor if you don't. Check it out.

My 1996 tahoe is leaking water ,carpets are wet

Statistacally--most leaks come from sunroofs and yes they can be one side or the other. Happens from clogged drains. Sunroof drains run across the headliner and down the a-pillar. you can have them cleaned and checked. This is all assuming you have a sunroof. Hope I helped. Thanks.
