Question about 1996 Chevrolet Suburban

2 Answers

Engine cough Everything is running fine...but the engine "coughs" while at highway speed...no timing problem...could be a bad plug or plug wire, but seems to sound like an interruption in fuel supply...replaced pump in tank not too long ago...thing I might have a clogged filter in the fuel line somewhere...any thoughts?

You have a missfire in one or more of the cyclinders. Could be cause by faulty coil when hot or as you mentioned a wire or plug. But if it runs well any other time I would say it a coil when gets hot

Go to Auto Zone and have the Suburban scanned for DTC codes, Auto Zone scan for free and most Auto shop will do it for $10.00 to $20.00 since they want your business cause they know most large Auto Parts store scan for free.
It sounds like you have a miss fire which can be caused by and O2 sensor or dirty MAF sensor which can be cleaned or time to replace the rotor and cap, plug wire and spark plugs.
Note that the distributor cap and rotor is made of plastic and is know to crack do to time and heat. There is also a rubber valve or screen at the bottom of the distributor that get's dirty and the inside of the distributor collects with condesation and corrode the rotor and caps too.
Good luck and hope this helps, Get it scanned and see if it's a sensor that is causing the miss fire on the hightway. If not then replace the cap and rotor and clean out the distributor if needed. Inspect the plug wire and replace if needed and change the plugs.

Keep me posted. be glad to help you out.

It sounds like a bad connection or a broken wire somewhere. Check to make sure that all connections to the battery, engine, and chassis grounds are clean and tight.

1998 vw passat v6 wouldn't kick over. Diagnostic tool pointed to camshaft sensor. Replaced it and mechanic tested electrics and replaced plugs. Battery was going flat so used jumper leads and still no go....

It's possible it may be that your timing belt slipped I have replaced a couple in VW's when they get older this may be why you received the code for the camshaft sensor as they are really working together only way to tell is to look at position of your rotor in the distributor to see if it is lined up exactly on the firing order if it is the belt its a very time consuming job and does take some mechanical knowledge it is not really a job for a novice and if it is the belt you will see that there are several to choose from do not buy the cheapest belt as you will have the same problem very quickly as they tend to stretch more than the better belts you don't have to buy VW parts but a name brand also you may have the firing order wrong on the plugs if everything was replaced check to see your firing order and match it up with the wires to the right cylinders

91 olds cutlass supreme runs rough and wont stay idle.

If your vehicle is fuel injected I would say you have a blown fuel regulator. This would cause excess fuel into the cylinders (flooding) causing a miss and coughing and also blow fuel into the air breather. If will also cause the vehicle to run poorly and could cause the vehicle to stall. Also to much fuel on startup can flood the cylinders and cause the vehicle to no start.

Car starts running rough at idle, eventually quits running. Has new plugs, wires, cap, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter, IAC Valve, and gas cap.

Back then, Honda suggested timing belt replacement every 60,000 miles. If your Honda has that much mileage or more and has never had the belt replaced, now may be the time.

I have a 1992 chevy suburban 4x4 I bought it used and has run bad since i have owned it. i replaced the distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter, spark plugs. then i took it to two mechanics and they could not...

ok tiny lets look at other causes, if its fuel injected change the throttle position sensor located on the throttle body , also the MAP and the MASS sensors, if it is carburated the the carb may need rebuilding
