    The engine keeps running.

  • mariannerog May 28, 2009

The ignition switch has been replaced with a new one, and it still does the same thing.

Thank you to greg margo, it is the ignition rod, now the question is how do I fix that?

Does the engine stay running or does it run for a few seconds and then shut off?

Sounds like a bad ignition switch. If you're able to turn the switch to the off postion and remove the key and the engine keeps running, the switch is bad and needs replacing. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.

After researching your problem further, it appears that this is a fairly common Ford issue. It could be one of the following:

    • Electrical problem; check for short-circuit in fuse box

    • Ignition wiring

    • Ignition rod - sometimes the rod that engages the ignition does not disengage fully (or at all) when the ignition switch is turned off

Hope this helps diagnose your problem. If not, re-post the problem, explain up front that the ignition switch has been replaced to avoid duplicate suggestions. Take care.

From what I can see, they're calling it an "actuator rod" and it's located inside the steering column. Still looking for an easy way to replace it. I'll get back to you.

If you have a carby on this engine then the fault will be in the needle and seat in the carby. It is a a valve that shuts off the fuel when the bowl is full but if held open by dirt/hair or the needle is worn or the seat is loose then the fuel pump just keeps pumping away like the engine needs fuel.

I have a 1995 Cadillac Deville. The car runs great. When Its cold. As soon as it gets hot, if you turn it off it won't start. And when it does start is has no power and spits and sputters to the point where you have to lay on the gas to keep it running. My husband and I have done everything imaginable to this car and it will run great for a day or two then we are right back to square one. Do you have any idea what the problem could be? Please help/

Radiator fan continues to run. Fan won't shut off when engine is turned off.

Its supposed to keep running even with the car turned off if the car is still to warm, they work off a sensor,, now if it keeps running way to long,, the sensor is bad,, ( if you have to pull the fuse to make it quit after a while,, then check the relay , and then the sensor )

Trouble starting my 1992 cav. 2.2. New battery, starter ok, new plugs, can start with ether and then idles and runs fine. Seems like I do not have that initial fuel??

well there is a fuel pressure regulator which keeps pressure on, even while engine is off. i would suspect it is bad, or you have something else leaking pressure off while the engine is not running.

The day time running light module on the back side of the front drivers fender likely needs to be replaced to fix your problem.Unplug it and the lights will work normally from the headlight switch but the day time running lights won,t work and also the high beam indicator light in the dash won,t come on when you switch to high beam but all the lights will work properly. You should replace the drl module as soon as you can but unplugging it will at least keep you from having to remove a battery cable.

Ran hot and stopped running and won''t crank. It will turn over and will start with starting fluid but won't keep running.

If the engine shut itself off when it was running hot, then you have done serious damage to your engine. It needs to be checked by a proper mechanic but at the least you have blown head gaskets but more likely warped or cracked heads. Sorry, but hope this helps.
