Sounds like you have worn rings in your motor. Needs a rebuild, or replacement.

If you have LOST Oil Pressure (Verified by the Gauge), then you could either have a clogged Oil Passages and no oil to move or worn Bearings or a Bad Oil Pump. DODGE has a HUGE ISSUE with SLUDGE. Adding a FLUSH (I actually use Diesel Fuel) in the Oil (2 quarts of Diesel for every 6 quarts of Oil) (this has worked for me for years and taught to me by a NASCAR OFFICIAL. Do not DRIVE the vehicle, but let it Idle for 20 Minutes while Monitoring Temperature. If the Oil Pressure is Truly ZERO, then Raise the RPM to get Oil Pressure UP to prevent any damage (lowest RPM to get Oil Pressure). After doing this for 20-30 minutes, Drain the Oil and change the Oil and Filter. Use a HIGHER OIL (20W-50) and see what happens. If the Oil Pressure goes up, then you probably have a clearance issue with your Main / Rod Bearings... If the Pressure goes down to Zero after it raises to Temp, then you need to change the Pump and Bearings.... Good Luck

I switched to the 15w40 diesel oil and my oil consumption dropped...


Believe it or not, it is normal for these engines to use about a quart every 2000 even when they are essentially new. Note that I said, "use", not "burn". The combination of higher compression and operating temperatures causes oil to pass through the engine. You might notice your tail pipes have a good coating on the inside. I managed to slow the process by converting to Mobil 1 0W40. I get much better performance and I only use a quart every 3500-4000.

Difficult one this ,does it blow out blue smoke ? whats the mileage ? ,need more info to try to work it out as this can be tricky and could be ok ,now with natural oil it could be gummed up piston rings and just using a nice diesel/petrol oil designed for turbo diesel engines might help clean the ring grooves due to its detergent qualities but if this is a high mileage engine then it may be due for a rebuild ,most oil consumption is caused by worn rings/bores or valve guide seals .

2004 dodge durango 5.7 hemi runs real rough white smoke comes out then blows oil cap off.


Ah oh..white smoke is water in the cylinder and cap blowing off is compressed air in the crank case..sounds like you have a blown head gasket or intake or both...have your radiator and block pressure tested..if gasket is leaking it will fail to hold pressure.. Check your oil for water sometimes a bad intake gasket will let water in the oil.good luck..

have an accredited service shop to a wet and dry compression test on the engine
That determines engine condition
have the oil pressure checked using a mechanical gauge and if the pressure is below specs that indicates worn bearings overloading the oil control rings
leaks can be rear main seal or crank shaft seal at the front where the oil is blown away in the slip stream

How much is a "large amount"? And how long has it been since your last oil change? It is normal for a diesel engine to have fuel in the crankcase due to the high compression ratio. I believe if there is less than a liter (quart) after 4,000 miles then you have nothing to worry about. If it is more then I would suggest you have it inspected for leaking injectors.

2004 Doge Ram 2500 5.7 Hemi 190K mile had oil pressure gauge drop to ZERO and check gauges light come on and engine shut down.. Check oil 1 guart low, add oil. let cool. crank up, good gauges drove home 45...


If the valve lifters are quiet you most likely have oil pressure even with gauge showing "0".Sounds like the oil pressure switch going bad.I would try that first.

2006 Town & Country burning oil excessively. 40,000 miles; burning 1 quart every 1000 miles; no signs of the oil anywhere


At 40K miles it shouldn't burn that much oil, unless the motor has been abused or overheated. With no signs of oil leaks, the engine must be burning it via the exhaust,

Change the oil (use a good quality oil) and then observe oil consumption.

If it still uses excessive oil check further as below:-
1) if it blows blue smoke on steady accelleration (pistons or ring wear),
or
2) only blows blue smoke on initial accelleration after a period of steady coasting or de-celleration (faulty valve stem oil seals).

I have 2004 Dodge 3500 w/ 5.9 Cummins , at about 80,000 miles I had excessive oil fumes coming from underneath the hood of the truck . Fumes came from the slobber tube . Took it to the dealership . At first they replaced the fuel rail . Problem got worse . Took it to the dealership again , Oil pan dropped , engine head removed , fuel tank checked , at my cost at first . Results , number one piston top pitted like some took a pick axe to it , parts of piston rings missing , number six piston top clean , but parts of the rings missing as well . This took 17 days for the dealership to find out and to agree to have the engine repaired under warrenty . 14 more days to order and install new engine and turbo . 31 days in total to repair an engine that is defective . Two other engine were in the shop at the same time with the same problem . I now have 100,000 miles on the truck and only 20,000 miles on the new engine with the signs of the oily fumes showing up again . So , rings crack , pieces make their way out of the engine block thru the turbo , back pressure in the crank force the oily fumes out of the slobber tube . That has been one of the problems I have experienced with my Dodge Ram . I am not impressed with my 2004 Dodge , however , my 1995 Dodge Ram was great . Is the new Cummins Engines a true diesel with a replacable cylinder sleeve ?

I hope that this is not your problem , but the fastest way is to check compression in each cylinder and crank case pressure .

Location of oil pressure sensor of 1987 6.9 l diesel


Hi Chrisandra11, it is a bad idea to try to bypass this sensor, just replace it,this sensor in many cases is interlinked with with other engine functions, as for the glow plugs blowing, hmmmm they should be run through a relay, I have found that due to varying resistance across the plugs it is better to replace all rather than 1 or 2 good luck to you hope this helps
