Ignition switch won't turn over starter

I disconnected the battery on my 91 Nissan Maxima and when I reconnected, the starter won't turn or engage, except when I hotwire it. I checked fuses and cleaned connections, but nothing happens. The starter relay (Is it in a fuse box under the hood?)on my 91 Nissan Maxima must be labeled by a different name. Is it "Engine Cont"?

So the problem has been occuring for a year and you are just now trying to fix it? Sorry, I just simply do not understand why people do this...keep driving it until it won't drive anymore even though you KNOW it has a problem....Maybe you can explain this to me???

If you can hear the starter clicking when you try to start it, then you have a bad starter. If it makes no noise at all. then you most likely have a bad clutch switch.

I have a 1990 Maxima with 245,000 miles and when the car is warm, sometimes the starter will not engage. Sometimes it will click, go silent for a second, then engage. I have replaced both the starter and...

first, CONGRATS! thats alot of mileage! second look at your key chain and make sure it not too heavy. too many keys will destroy your ignition switch. third, replace the electrical portion of your ignition switch. this is most probable. if your key is loose(which most toyotas and nissans have tendency to wear down and become loose in the tumbler). fourth double check your connections at battery and starter to double check for ANY corrosion.

1995 nissan maxima doesnt start when cold, just clicks, and after trying for 5 to 10 minutes it finally starts... Please help me out...

it is one of two things.
  • the starter is either worn and brushes not making contact or an engine oil leak onto the starter. thus keeping the brushes from making contact you can check this by banging on the starter while someone trys turning the ignition back and forth to start.(making the click click click)

  • ignition switch is weak, not providing enough voltage from the to kick the soliniod all the way to start the starter

The way to check that is to hot wire the starter soliniod little wire, to battery voltage. (the big cable on the solinoid)
If it turns over good, then you can either replace the ignition switch or install a relay someware near the starter to supply it with propper current to kick the solinoid all the way to engage the motor.
The relay acts as a remote starter switch that feeds more direct power to the starter solinoid. Now the only thing the ignition switch is responsible for, is trigger the relay.

1995 Nissan Maxima starter won't always engage when key is turned

It is most likely the solenoid contacts that are getting bad. You can sometimes have an auto electric shop fix your starter for a reasonable price.
