Question about 2003 Mazda MPV

'03 MPV problem

Out of the blue, my MPV is shaking and making a jumping movement when in idle mode. It's worse in drive and reverse but does it when in neutral too. It's driving, but I can feel the jumping then too. The whole engine is shaking when I pop the hood. The check engine light just came on too, blinking. I had an oil change last week, and no one said they detected any other problems. I'm afraid it's something with the transmission...any advice? I have had this issue on my MPV 2003, I have it "repaired" at dealer several times since owning the vehicle, the dealship claims it is a coil. It's ridiculous because it is always a couple of hundred dollars to repair. I do notice this problem occurs when it is damp rainy outside (engine light starts blinking, stays on), and if I don't get it repaired get this.... it eventually goes away (a couple of days of driving it). Lovely peice of **** isn't it? I hate mazda, never to own one again!!!

We had a very similar problem on our 2003 mazda mpv. at first we were also told coils. we changed all the coils out and the problem came back. we found out that it was a leak in the egr valve and gasket. there was also another leak found after that. when the leaks were fixed, the problem stopped. i suggest checking for leaks in your engine, this could be the problem.

It could be your engine mounts if 1 or more of the rubbers on the mounts have collapsed then this could cause the vibration you describe

I started my car and it was running fine for a while but then it started shaking so i turned off the AC AND IT STOPPED SHAKING SO HARD then as i drove off out of the school onto the road and stopped,

Sounds like your engine timing needs to be advanced and yes I know your car is fuel injected and has coils but there is a small nut on back of jets that when loosed it can advance engine timing and the speed idle speed (driving with foot off the gas normally at coasting speed of 5mph.) My car did the same as yours but tune up and idle adjustment has my idle speed at 6 mph an no problems.

Shaking idle

sounds like a bad iac valve. idle air control, dirty throttle body, and relearn the idle after repairs.

Makes a loud poppin noise in fisrt gear and when u make turns and put in drive or reverse!!!

Have the U-joints inspected for wear and rust. One thing you can do is to set the brake and climb underneath and shake the drive line near the transmission and differential. If there is any movement in the joints, have them replaced. You can also have someone in the car, foot on brake, running, and have them shift in between drive and reverse. If the joints "jump", replace them. Let me know if you need anything else.

My 2004 MPV shaking so bad, specially when stepping on the brake at reverse or drive, and before that, the engine light was on. What do you think the problem was?

Hopefully this may be of use to you. I've just had similar symptoms with a 2003 MPV. It shook when it warmed up and with brakes applied. It also turned the check engine light on with codes P0171, P0174 and P0300 which were bank 1

Engine vibration in drive or reverse

Wow..thats not good..first have motor mounts checked, maybe the tranny mount or possibly if ur car has it is the driveshaft bearings...good luck on the oil leak...maybe tranny fluid..make sure if ur losing fluid that ur checking them incl. the tranny fluid...u might find ur leak first of all by rechecking the oil cap where it is supposed to be ...same with all fluid caps.

Mazda mpv engine

You need to have the system tested, but I think you have a spark plug wire that is shorted out.

'03 MPV problem

Your problem is a collapsed PCV hose. This is a common problem with MPVs. There was a recall on this issue, but even the replacement part is now failing. I diagnosed mine and replaced it myself several months ago.

It's easy to diagnose. In the very rear of the engine compartment, on the manifold just behind the valve cover, you can feel (and sometimes even see from the driver's side) a rubber hose that enters the manifold at a 90 degree angle. If you can wedge your hand in to get a good feel of it, you will probably find that it has collapsed at the 90 degree elbow.

I have heard stories of dealers charging in the neighborhood of $300-600 for this repair. If you are mechanically inclined, you can change it out for the cost of the part (about $85 available only at the dealer - of course). There is a really good illustration and instructions available at

A word of warning - about six weeks after fixing the PCV hose, my coolant temp sensor went out. Research indicated that this is common. It seems that the violent shaking caused by the bad PCV hose causes the brass ring around the sensor to crack, leak and eventually fail.

If you have trouble locating the link for the PCV repair email me at
