You need to pull the tranny out.
Then the flywheel needs to be unbolted from the engine.
if it's an automatic, purchase a new flywheel, if its a clutch, you can have a new ring gear pressed on to the flywheel...

Be very careful when removing the ring gear. You can usually just knock
it off from the back bit by bit working your way around the ring. Be
careful not to damage the cast iron flywheel which is not good at
taking shock loads. Safest way is to drill a whole through the body of
the ring gear, i.e. the area between the tooth gap and the inside
diameter of the ring. This area is not hardened like the teeth. Then
use a cold chisel to split the ring gear at the point where you've
    drilled the hole.

Best if it's possible chilling the flywheel and heating the ring
gear. Best way is in an oven to get an even heat through the ring. You
need to make sure you don't get it above about 250 degrees centigrade
as this temperature will start to reduce the hardness of the ring gear
teeth thereby significantly shortening their life. The worst way to
heat the ring is likely to be with a torch because of the difficulty of
getting an even heat and avoiding softening some of the ring gear
teeth. You'll still get the ring on the flywheel O.K. with a torch but
the effect of softening the teeth in one particular area will not be
    noticed from some months.

Some ring gears should only be fitted on one way. These have a chamfer
on the end of each tooth to help the pinion slide into engagement. Make
sure you fit them the correct way. Other rings have a larger chamfer on
one side of the inside diameter. The large chamfer helps the ring slide
onto the flywheel and sits better on the machined shoulder of the
    flywheel.

Most ring gears though can be fitted on either way.

When the ring is warmed place it on the flywheel, it should drop on
fairly easily but may need tapping down during cooling. Make sure it is
firmly against the shoulder. Use a feeler gauge of about 0.015" to
check the gap between the ring and the shoulder, if you can get the
feeler between the two in one area then tap the ring down with a copper
headed hammer or an ordinary hammer with a soft metal block ... don't tap on the teeth...

Flywheel or something grings against the starter when clutch is engaged

There is no way the ring gear will hit the starter pinion unless the fly wheel bolts on the crank shaft or loose allowing the flywheel to run out of true. If you have had clutch/ rear seal work done lately the fly wheel will only fit in one position and if that was ignored at some time then the fly wheel will run out and touch the starter pinion.. I would also check the adjustment on the starter pinion as it has to be set by the lever pivot to a correct distance or it will touch the teeth of the ring gear

You are refering to the teeth part known as the ring gear. It usually wears in 2 places ad in te old days we used to heat the ring up to release from flywheel and turn it 90 Deg and let cool and refit. Just as easy to get new flywheel these days

I have replaced the starter 3 times and most of the time it sounds like the bendix isn't hitting the flywheel ring gear

You need to make sure that the starter is positioned right first, sometimes they need to be shimmed to change the position. In some cases though this can mean a warped a fly wheel. Make sure none of the teeth the fly wheel are missing. I had one missing once and anytime it hit that spot i had to move it which isnt easy on an automatic.

When i start my car the starter be grinding do that mean the staeter is bad?

it can do the pinion may be worn, take off the motor and see! do it now beause it might be the ring gear, you see if you ahve a bad pinion then it will dammage the fing gear! if the ring gear is dammaged... you can replace starter,, It may seem fine, but the dammaged ring will grind up the new starter's pinnion, once the ring gear is dammaged then it is gear box out! so look now to avoid more lenghty and expensive repairs!! Have a nice DAy........Bruce.

Have a 95 chev s10 with 2.2 and standard trans. intermiten won't start when it dosen't start I can hear the starter spining but it dosent engage with the motor, already replaced starter and selenoid and...

Was the starter shimmied to match up with the fly wheel properly so the starter gear fly wheel ring gear don't bind or out to far apart that they don't reach each other. The other problem is that if the starter gear was to far apart, it may have shaved the teeth on the starter gear causing your engine not to turn.

You need to pull the starter out and check the drive gear. If the drive gear is no good you will have to replace the starter. Make sure the cogs on the fly wheel are okay. If the fly wheel is damaged you will have to replace the fly wheel.
