I don't think I've ever had a gauge that was very accurate in more than 20 vehicles I've owned. At present my Nissan PU is full at just below 3/4 and at half tank has less than half the fuel until it's dry. If yours is really out of whack you can replace the sending unit in the tank but it requires draining the tank, dropping the tank so you can reach the pump/sending unit from the top. Or you can live with it and learn when it gets down to a eighth of tank - which is when you should get more fuel because the pump is cooled by the fuel left in the tank.

Your fuel gauge operates by a float in the tank, little arm that moves in relationship to fuel level. the arm is hooked up to a variable resistor and the resistance is reported as an electrical signal and that's what makes your gauge up on the dash read a certain level. if your gauge changes a bunch while you are just going down the road you probably have an electrical problem, something getting an intermittent connection. if there is some compromise in that wire, sometimes it makes a good connection, sometimes not so good, what happens is that the wire makes resistance and that changes the reported value. if the needle swings wildly when you go around corners or such then you likely have a mechanical problem. there are dampers in the tank to help limit this, but sometimes things get wangled out of place. to solve this problem you will probably have to drop the tank. so you can decide which set of symptoms most closely matches your situation, or you can trace the wire down and make sure it has good connections first because it's easier than dropping the tank. hope that helps.

How can gas cap loose message be linkd to my gas guage not working correctly?

My guess is the fuel tank sender unit has come adrift inside the tank somehow. Run the car to a very low tank level, locate the tank sender unit release it to access it and see if that gives you any clues. Please remember you are dealing with gasoline and all precautions should be taken. If you are not sure how to do it get a knowledgeable neighbour or good DIY tech to help. I'm pretty sure if you fix the sender problem it will stop the erratic message.

Why fuel gauge not working gas guage on 2009 santa fe stays on empty even with a full tank of gas. Guage fluctuates from empty to 3/4 full to empty to 1/3 full at any given time.

It could be the sending unit in the tank or the gauge on the dash. A mechanic would test the signal coming from the sending unit to verify.

When my fuel tank is full the guage registers empty

Could be a problem with the gauge in the instrument cluster, or the wiring that goes back to the tank, or the sending unit in the tank.
The sending unit has a float much like your toilet which could stick or fail to move.

Gas Guage stays full for a long time

Usually a sign of a faulty sending unit in the tank. If that is the problem it would need to be replaced or repaired.
You could start at close to empty and then check the resistance of the sending unit with a VOM meter as you add fuel to the tank.

Just filled the gas tank in my 2006 f-350 turbo diesel super duty (6.0), started the truck and the guage showed a full tank. Drove down the road about 1/10 of a mile and the guage dropped to dead empty...

A loose connection on the sending unit could cause the problem but also moisture in the tank in cold weather could also be a factor in which i would add fuel line antifreeze to a full tank of fuel..........Hope this helps you out.

Fuel gage is not reading the amount of fuel in the tank. It either reads completely full or completelr empty.

Sounds like the sending unit in the gas tank may be the problem. The other possibility may be the guage but usually the sending unit goes first.

Grand prix gas gauge not working

should be a grey wire going to the top of fuel tank connects to fuel guage / when the guage in the tank reads grounded it shows full , no ground it shows empty. if you ground that grey wire and the guage jumps to full then faulty guage if nothing maybe bad ground on the tank itself. the guages are a reostat like a tyco race car gun the more it moves the more it grounds .. good luck

Gas guage-oxygen sensor?

The oxygen sensor has nothing to do with the fuel gauge. There are two possibilities for the gas gauge error, first it could be the in-tank gas level sensor or it could be a defective stepper motor which drives the gauge. A professional scan tool can determine the fuel level being sent by the in-tank sensor, if that disagrees with the gauge, then the stepper motor needs replacing.
